Root Will a rom reset all my applications?

I'm new to rooting and ROM's and I was wondering if installing a ROM on my phone will reset all the installed programs and setting of the phone? And also all my home screen icons?

Depends on the ROM you install however most do require you to wipe all your data and cache which means your settings will be lost, you can back up your apps though so you dont have to redownload them using Titanium Backup

Your apps will be the only thing that will be remembered and they should download and restore on their on since they are synced with your gmail. Your old app data will be lost though. I also have my contacts synced to my gmail so they are immediately synced back too.
