Will an HSPA+ phone work on LTE?

I was very surprised that this hasn't (apparently) been asked yet... even looked around via Google.

So if I buy any of the newest HSPA+ phones, once LTE is fully deployed and switched on, is it going to work, or will it forever be limited to a lesser speed?

HSPA+ and LTE, while both GSM based technologies, are completely incompatible with one another. They require and use different radios in the device.
