Will I ever get 2.2? Getting the run-around from provider.

I have an HTC Hero, just bought it last month. I love the phone and am looking forward to 2.2. Now, I understand from google searches that I may never get it. My Alltel rep doesn't know. Neither does HTC. Or, their just not telling me. I hate having a new phone and trapped in old software. When the upgrade happens, I want to be part of it.

It's a simple question: will I be able to upgrade to 2.2 or not?

Sprint/HTC has said that the Hero will not receive 2.2.

That being said, if you root your phone (gain admin access and lose your warranty) you can put a custom version of 2.2 on your phone.

Chances are good you won't ever, not officially.

Why did you pick the Hero, out of all the Android phones? It's really very outdated by this point. Even the rooted 2.2 ported to it is an anemic, stripped-down version. Dunno why anyone'd bother.

It was the only android on our network.

First off, the Hero is NOT going to be able to handle the 2.2 update. Second Alltel was purchased by VZW but they had to sell a portion of it because of FCC rules and regulations. A large portion was purchased by AT&T while the smaller portion was purchased by ATNI(new company on the east coast.) So unfortunately you will not get the chance to upgrade, but your probably only on a 1 year contract anyways. So it is a great introduction to Android. So whether your area is going VZW or AT&T, you will have some cool choices in phones when your contract is up.
