Will Metro be clamping down on tetherers?

T-Mobile to throttle customers who use unlimited LTE data for torrents/p2p » TmoNews

Yes, I realize it's a T-Mo article but they own us. I also realize that 99% of the article addresses Torrent users and P2P BUT they Clearly slipped the T word in there too.

First, I'm not totally clear myself they Can ID you as Just a tetherer If you are using a user agent switcher.

I know technically, T-Mo has a brazeelyun Gig limit per month and last I heard, the Meto limit was supposed to be around 60G a month.

Wondering here...

I don't get it either, I have an app on my phone that searches and downloads specifically from kickasstorrents, so because i'm using that app on my phone I'll get throttled? When I'm using probably LESS data then some people who only stream music all day.

I am NOT a tech expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I would think it's Easy Peasy for them to ID those certain web addressi that are associated with Torrenting.

Now, telling that your Netflocking is actually being done on a laptop even though your user agent says Metro, that's seems more difficult to me to determine.

I am Concerned about the tethering part.

If I were Torrenting/P2P, I'd be Worried.

I really doubt that there is anything they would do, Ive heard of some users who use around 80gb a month and have no problems.

Before the merger, metro would start throttling at around 60GB but so far T-Mobile has not been throttling (it seemingly would throttle if someone got to 9765GB within a billing cycle) so that's not really what it's talking about.

But T-Mobile has one of the best tether detections out of all of them so thats the question. If they have a new method to detect even when you switch user agents or use other bypasses.

Well, at least with my Aesis using Chrome and the Ultimate UA switcher, when I first start to T, I have to open a browser screen where I get the T-Mo upsell because I have to log into Chrome first for that UA add on to load up.

So unless I use Wifi to load the UA Then change to T, they have me "circumstantially". Of course, if my Wifi is good enough at that time to load Chrome then I wouldn't need to T now would I.

OcalaFlGuy, saw your other post about your "iPud" not working right on tethering.
So. I've been tethering for a while. this is for informational purposes. ymmv.

Using a rooted S3 with CM11. Desktop computer runs linux mint & can dual boot into several other distros.

I have never gotten the upsell in any linux app. I regularly use 5 different browsers. No user agent switcher. Tried a windows PC & an iPad. Both got me an upsell page.

Using Opera on the phone & requesting desktop site, gets me the upsell page. Yes, on the phone! Using Opera on the linux box, does not, however.

Using virtualbox with linux as host & Win XP as guest, gets me the upsell, no matter which browser I use.

Generally pulling about 60-90 GB/month...

Maybe this can help some one else figure out ways around things...

I use the built-in tethering on my Nexus 7 when I need to get my laptop online in the field. I haven't had any issues, and I never need a user agent switcher. I buy my data a la carte however, so it's highly possible that I don't have a problem because the faster I use my data, the sooner I have to buy more, which means more $$$ for T-Mo.

Even with a user agent switcher, I'd imagine it would be easy to spot any tethered traffic since TCP packets are tagged with the originating device's MAC address if your hotspot is just acting as a router. The hotspot would need to transceive all data as the originating device to avoid detection, then re-packaging the data before sending to your tethered device. I'm not sure if this is how hotspot apps work or not.

Amazing dave......you are correct, besides if these jerks would stop doing that, maybe they would be a little bit relaxed on enforcement......but no ,you people who are using 125GB on a phone, this causes the local tower to slow everyone else down, people get pissed off and call and complain about it. ...it's a vicious cycle

While on metropcs, I used to use a "Linux user agent string" for Firefox in "about:config" settings. Never had to worry about tmo upsell page. Just takes half second longer to launch Firefox and it passed verification :)

I call BS.

I see no way just one user could affect a tower's performance.

I'd like to see some backup for what you say here.

Besides, BOTH Metro and T-Mo clearly send mixed messages. Both of them have Official Corporate data caps at levels nearly impossible to reach by using the handset As Intended.

Do some research on the subject....this is a very complex problem because it's done remotely, they can tell what you are doing as far as downloading goes. It's a very complex technology

I have officially been blocked from side tethering through pdanet and foxfi... sucks.. no root.. with the lg f7.. its all good ill be getting my note 4 tom. And will be back to metro eventually..

What would make you believe for one second that cell phone companies would ever do anything other than try to ### you in every way possible, without telling you first, and then bill you somehow ..MUCH LESS even entertain the thought of "helping" a customer or "going easy" on them? These are the lowest and dirtiest xorporations on earth. Thats like saying "if the drunk drivers would stop killing people then maybe the cops would let me off when I blow over the legal limit" or that they would let more people go who are clocked at 95mph if the few people that drive 125mph would stop doing so.
