Will Sprint Hero 2.1 Update Work in ALASKA?

I have an UNROOTED HTC Hero running firmware 1.5 - got the 2.1 update on my computer and have not installed yet because I want to know if this will screw up my phone since Sprint is NOT my carrier. My service is through Alaska Digitel/GCI based here in AK.

Another question: Are you supposed to remove the SD card from the phone before running the exe file to update to 2.1?

Anyone familiar with how this would work?? Thanks in advance!

I also have a hero on GCI and tried to run the update. It didn't work.
These are the error messages...
"please get the correct update utility and try again"
"Error 135 Signature Error"
Even though we roam on sprint out of state this update isn't working.
I also doubt gci is going to push an update

I called Alaska Digitel / GCI recently (late May 2010) to ask if the currently available Android 2.1 update from Sprint would work on my HTC Hero. The answer was no, they have to customize it which they were currently doing and testing. Their release date was "a couple of weeks" which would be mid-June. I asked if we would be notified of availability and he didn't know. He wasn't sure if they would announce it on their website either. So just keep asking, I guess.

When anyone hears anything about the update, please post about it here. I actually have a family member who works at GCI/AK Digitel, who also has an Hero, but doesn't know when the update is going to be out either. If I hear anything I will be sure to post any info.

The new Android 2.1 OS free upgrade will be available 1st thing Monday. This will allow additional functionality such as picture messaging for HTC Hero. A text message will be sent out today to all GCI customers that have this phone, letting them know that the upgrade will be available Monday. The Android 2.1 OS upgrade will be available online "Click Here" to go to the download. There will also be a hyperlink to this Android OS upgrade from GCI.com.
