Root Willing to pull recovery just need help doing it

Techwolf

Newbie
So i'd like to help out with this phone and get the ball rolling with things. I bought a brand new phone, it's sitting right beside me, haven't done a thing to it yet, and i'm willing to help pull the stock img, but i'm not sure how.

Shabbypenguin told me to do this " once in cwm i need someone to connect via adb, go to mounts and storage and mount system then run this command

dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p17 of=/sdcard/system.ext4.img "

If someone can give me a bit more of a step by step with this i'd be willing to help.
I already downloaded the android sdk and found the adb, but i'm not sure how to mount the device or run the commands.

I know i'm a bit of a noob :D but we all gotta start somewhere right. Thanks in advance for any help guys.

You could try running the command in Terminal Emulator after granting SU permissions and see if it'll grab it that way... :)

he needs the image before it's been rooted, so that wouldn't work. The way i understand it, i need to install cwm (which i just tried a bit ago and odin is giving me trouble too) then use cmd to run the adb, after that i'm not sure what's next

Yea. You need to use adb from recovery. Once you run that command there will be a file on your sdcard called 'system.ext4.img' you would then need to upload it to something (like drop box for example) and post the link here. And yes, it needs to be before you root.

when you say run it in recovery, do you mean it's a command i need to type in the phone itself? i tried loading up adb just to get familiar with it but i didn't see anything for mounting the system or the card. Either way i found that i'm having the issue that other people are having with odin crashing when trying to install cwm

No. You will need to connect the phone to the computer and access it via adb (the Android Debug Bridge) using command prompt. And yea, I'm having the issue with Odin crashing too. Haven't heard anything out of shabby, but hopefully he's working out the kinks... just be patient.
If anyone can hook us up its him and the oudhs

i got faith in him, if i'm not mistake he's one of the people who got the stuff started on prevail :D. i just wish i could help a bit more, but i'm still pretty new to android, and i'm not really sure where to start for learning, what i need ti someone to kinda show me the ropes and teach me this stuff

The best advice on can give you is read read read... there are tons of tutorials on just about everything you can think of. If you don't understand something, just ask.

Most of the people on this forum are very helpful. And as far as I'm concerned, the only stupid questions are the ones you're afraid to ask... (well that and eta requests:rolleyes: )

If you need help with something in particular, I'm on here pretty much daily. Just shoot me a pm and I'll do my best to give you an answer, or at least point you in the right direction :)

So can we pull the "recovery"/system image with the new update? Or does it have to be like right out of the box image?

If I can pull the image with the update then I can get it.

Awesome, I'm going to try it over the next few days. I'll probably update January unless I get something before then.

Thanks for the support guys!

Edit: lol no problem Slayer72. I'm a techy but still learning about Android, and Linux file structure to a lesser extent. Thanks for clarifying which image I(we) need to pull (I wouldn't of known that so..)!

ok so after seeing that yesterday the cwm issue had been taken care of, i attempted to pull the system for shabby. However, when i connect my phone to my computer while in cwm, it doesn't install correctly, and when i check the device manager, the only thing there is an unknown device called "Full". I haven't a clue as to why or how to get around it, any ideas guys?

Right click the unknown device, click properties, click the drivers tab and click update drivers

Have you installed the drivers found here?

Edit- I don't see them any more. Have you tired uninstalling the unknown device?

the image is purely for those that may wish to unrooted stock. for anyone that doesnt care you can flash my rooted stock and use superuser's unroot option :)

So do you still need someone to pull it then shabby? if not i'll go ahead and root mine, was waiting to see if you needed it before moving forward
