Windows for Android - file manager with desktop interface

This idea sounds pretty crazy but still it was accomplished and the app is currently available in Goolge Play store. Here is a Google Play link

We created a file manager app with desktop interface for tablets - some kind of Windows for Android. It is a real desktop environment - icons, windows, drag & drop, etc.

File management is deeply integrated into all modern desktop environments because file is a fundamental block of the computer data management. This is why 'WinCommander' was implemented as a file manager. It is unusual to run desktop environment by an app, not by an operating system. However, such approach makes it possible to get desktop environment installed on device in minutes by simple app download from the Google Play store, without the need to make heavy and complex modifications to the device - such as installation of new operating system. There is no performance cost for in-app approach of running sophisticated desktop environment: 'WinCommander' runs as smoothly as operating system's own user interface.

Just a note to add context, this is apparently just for tablets (and a pay-for app, $2).

We've asked opinion of several users who downloaded the app and the feedback is outstanding. Many users see this app is a huge step towards next-generation Android for tablets, providing what many users are striving for so long: desktop experience on Android tablets.

An ability to put files directly on desktop surface, file operations by drap-and-drop between two windows or window/desktop surface and many other features are coming directly for the Desktop World.

Both iOS and Android user interface still make tablets look like just an oversized smartphone. App "WinCommander" is designed to change it. Tablet is much more that just an enlarged version of smartphone.

If you have Android tablet, you probably dream of having full Desktop-class user interface like users of Windows tablets do. So, what options do you have? The honest answer is basically none. With Chrome OS retired and new Google project "Fuchsia" still in very early stages, there is nothing that would provide rich Windows-based interface for your Android tablet.

That's where app "WinCommander" comes into play. It provides rich Desktop-class Windows interface, re-designed and adapted to improve user experience for smaller touch screen of a tablet.

Many users would immediately note that it is just mostly a file manager. This statement is not fully accurate. The problem of providing complete end-to-end Windows interface would require total overwriting of the existing Android OS on a device, which is a risky and complex procedure. On the other hand, it is very easy to deliver software product to user via app installable from an app store. App "WinCommander" made it possible to get Windows interface by simple act of app download from Google Play. The reason why it become possible is because "WinCommander" does not run other apps in windows. However, this is not the most important part of the overall Windows experience - Desktop computer users spend much more time managing files, browsing Internet and other tasks.

With no other option in sight to get Desktop experience for an Android tablet, free app "WinCommander" gives user this unique chance by simple app download from Google Play.
