Windows Smartscreen

If you have windows 8, be sure to disable Windows smart screen. I hate smart screen, yeah I'm sure Opera web browser just must be PACKED with virus'.

Disable it from Privacy and Security from control panel.

Have a good day and have you had any bad experiences with Win8?

This:

"This file is not commonly downloaded and may harm your computer"

Seen while attempting to download Google Chrome of all things...basically Microsoft's attempt at protecting the user from him/herself

is this the same as UAC in windows vista and 7? just named something different? or is it something different all together?

The Smartscreen filter is an Internet Explorer download protection feature meant to prevent malware downloads, however it has far too many false positives to be effective. UAC is more like the prompt for admin privileges.

Smartscreen isnt exclusive to Windows 8, either. It's part of Internet Explorer itself.

ahh thanks. lol ive been running win8 for about a week (giving it one last good test to see if its work it or not) i haven't seen this... maybe because i use chrome. lol im not even sure ive ever opened IE...

I've been setting up friend's Samsung Windows 8 laptop, that came from Hong Kong, over the last couple of nights. This Smart Screen thing, it never works on anything that's downloaded. Sure enough it pops up, but then it says it's unable to verify if the download is safe for not because the network or internet is unavailable. It's not being blocked or anything AFAIK.

According to the OP, if it thinks that Opera is unsafe, Smart Screen can't be very "smart"

Think this is a bit of a lemon from Microsoft TBH...but then what's new?

I see Moody's avatar "Friends don't let friends do Windows" :D ....we might do something about that next with my friend's laptop.

If you're running Windows 8 and smartscreen flags a download, you can usually click "more Information" and then you'll find an option that'll let you run it anyway. :D

My computer had windows 8 on it gave it a day try didn't like any of the features it offered went and replaced it with windows 7 ultimate so glad I did way more options to customize it with 3rd party themes and it's a lot smoother then windows I'm also running Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop its a real fast laptop

to download a file when you get the 'not commonly downloaded' error, means jumping through hoops and a hidden option buried in the warning itself. the average user won't find it and would just click either 'cancel' or 'delete file'. it seems to come up only after the file has downloaded completely.

Every time I've seen SmartScreen on a friend's PC when installing software. It just goes unable to connect to Internet and so can't verify if the install is OK or not. So we turned it off.

Bump:

Almost a year later and it's still not been fixed. Nothing wrong with internet connenction.
