Windscribe

Ok, for whatever reason(s) I probably won't be able to use opera mini vpn, which is not even listed in the play store. I looked up good free vpns and found Windscribe. I downloaded that, but how do I use it? Most of the instructions seem to be for computers, not phones.

I did the chat thing but I didn't get an answer yet. I think it might be up and running on its own. Should I just go ahead and assume it's working? If I get 10 free gb a month, will it all get used up if I just let it run?

If you leave it running at all times 10gb could last you the whole month as long as you don't do any video streaming like youtube, netflix, etc. Windscribe lets you check how much of the free 10gb you have used on their website when you're logged in to your account.

If you want to check if it's working just visit the following link. If it's working then your ip and location should be different from your real ones.

How do I find out the "real" stuff? I'm sorry for all these questions but I'm pretty new to this. For instance, there's IKEv2 and there's OpenVPN. Which should I choose or can I do that if I don't get the paid version? Also, it says I have 9.9 gb left. That seems as if it's getting used pretty fast.

You can see your real ip and location by disabling windscribe and visiting the link I posted in my previous post. Make note of that and then visit again with windscribe enabled and compare. If different, then windscribe is working.

In that link you should see:
Hello followed by a bunch of numbers
from YOUR LOCATION

That is what you would compare(ip and location).

I don't have windscribe on my phone, but looking at the guide in step 4 it says to use IKEv2.

Also you should only complete steps 1 through 6. When you reach the part that says "OpenVPN via OpenVPN for Android app", do not follow any more steps as that is an alternative guide to setup windscribe with a different app.

Oh and give at least an entire day before you can assess how much of your 10gb is being consumed. And remember that when your installed apps update from the playstore that will also consume.

I shut off automatic updating of apps. I want to have more control of it. If I do run over the limit, will it just shut down or would I get charged or what?

You will not be charged (windscribe doesn't have your credit card). Once the 10gb finish you won't be able to use the vpn till the next month.

You'll need to read their billing tariff for that I think. However if you never registered a method of payment and are using a free service, then they can't charge you. They'll just cut you off.

10GB a month for a VPN? I go through that in a day with my use of a VPN, because it's always on. I use ExpressVPN myself, which is truly unlimited data. https://www.expressvpn.com/
I have been using them for years now.

That looks good. It's not free, though. I guess I'll stick with Windscribe for now.

Main thing is for me, free VPNs often don't work in China. Plus also some of them have very intrusive advertising, as well as user data mining privacy concerns, as well as very low data use limits sometimes.

ExpressVPN is $99 a year, and given the amount I use it both on laptops and phones, I think it's good value to me. Plus they don't have any user data logging at all.

How intrusive is Windscribe? I read the list of pros and cons before I downloaded it. Just because it's Canadian doesn't bother me.
