Winter Rye grass seeds

Does anyone use this during the cold months for their lawn? Ive used it the year before last but it was scotts brand and it didn't work out well at all. So while my neighbors to the left and right of me had green grass all during the winter months and my lawn was looking like little Afghanastan (yellow).

Anyhow for those of you who do use it, do you cut your grass low then apply the seeds or what? Im going to give it another try this year. By the way my lawn is type is bermuda

I see you are in CA. We've had our lawn in CO overseeded with Rye. Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. We are trying a pasture mix in the back because of drought, and I don't know if the stuff even sprouted.

What is sprouting, and fast, is birdseed!
