Wired Tethering

when i conect my TB to my laptop in the options i can change it to, internet connection mode, or internet pass-through.
fist question will this give my laptop or any pc i conect internet?
is it free? will verizon charge me for tethering it?
i have unlimited data.
i have pdanet, but think it would be much more easy if i could just do it this way.

i could be wrong, but i thought that wired tethering was legit. i think the tethering service was only for wifi tethering - which simply exacerbates the hypocracy of charging for tethering.

yeah, vzw calls it "mobile hotspot" - so i think wired tethering is legit.

they charge for mobile hotspot - turning your phone into a wifi router.

but i don't think they charge for wired tethering.

Tethering whether wired or wi-fi is a violation of your ToS (Terms of Service) unless your phone has the wi-fi hotspot hardware and you pay the $20.00 for the 2 gigs (if that price is still the same) as an add-on to your data plan and other charges.

While it is rare that anyone has gotten into trouble for it you are not supposed to do it as per your contract. That said a lot of people use it moderately for connections at hotels, to check emails, and such.

This is not meant to be a slam on anyone who does or does not tether, simply for information purposes.

Wired tethering is not part of your contract with VZW, you are not supposed to do it. If you do you will need the approprate files/drivers installed on the computer you are using as well as the app on the phone.

but when i connect my phone to the pc it automaticaly installs drivers and all i need to do is set my thunderbolt instead of charge only to share internet with computer. how am i violating tos when they give me the option to.

Ahh... the Thunderbolt changes things. Verizon is running a promotion where you can tether for free with the Thunderbolt until May 15th (I think). If you have a TB then tether away either wired or via wi-fi.

After the expiration of the free period, Verizon will probably shut it down and you will have to get an app from the market to do wired tethering or root and install the wireless tether app. If you use an app from the market then that would be a violation of your ToS.

The other option is to sign up with Verizon for their wifi hotspot add-on service.

Also see related post( !ATTENTION )in this section and others in news section.
Try not to use the word " tethering " because this forum is DEFINITELY monitered by all carriers on this subject.

How does a carriers monitoring of ones use of tether affect anyone?

Unless Phases is giving out our IP addresses (which I positively doubt) AT&T, Verizon, and others don't know jack about us. I would pay for a tether plan but they won't give a D1 owner that option.

This is NOT just an option for the TB. I had an EVO and this was also an option on that phone as well.

So does anyone know if it is possible to connect your phone and computer using this option when your phone is plugged into your computer?
