Wondering why your Smart TV is so affordable?

But you don't ave to connect a 'smart' TV to your home network, wither by Ethernet or WiFi.

Well every single app, software, etc. Nowadays is collecting your data, so unless you're completely off the grid living in a cave, you're screwed.

Unless of course you want to use a catchup or streaming service with it.

It's not a surprise. My (now quite old) TV wanted me to give it my postcode during the set up. I decided to do some research before giving it the information and discovered that it was to provide adverts in the programme guide! Turns out that if I didn't give it that info I didn't get any ads, but I wonder how many just enter whatever is asked without questioning why.

When I read stuff like "LG's new TVs will now come with Google Assistant and Alexa" (a genuine recent headline) my response is "that's two reasons not to buy them then" (before anyone asks, Assistant is turned off on my phone, and most of the settings it requires are off in my account. I'm fine with this, it doesn't bring me a benefit that I consider worth the loss of privacy).

In hopes and possibility of today's technically, manufacturer is looking forward in seeing customer's to discover the full potential of their devices. So why purchase a Smart TV if you don't want what it was designed to do.

The object of the question is why the TVs are "so cheap" has nothing to do with any other technology that's going around out there capiche?

Apollo 13, one of my favourite movie quotes. ''I don't care what anything was designed to do; I care about what it can do".

Because that's only what's available now. Unless you want to buy a second hand, like an old CRT set or something?

I think just because a TV is "smart"' I don't necessarily have to use that feature. As long as it's got HDMI input I can use my Raspberry Pi 3 with Kodi, etc, and watch and do whatever I like with the thing.,

To bad this thread don't have down voting:oops:

i dont think the data gathering feature.. helps reduce the price of device.

the maker.. has to make a profit.

and in today's Smart world... and all the devices we own.
it is unlikely that you can hide... we buy our devices to be smart...
take advantage of the connected age.

but if you want to wear a tin-hat and hide.
it is your right.

i hate advertising too.. dont want my info out there.
give them as little PERSONAL info as possible.
but the smart devices do have advantages... that i dont want to give up.
