Won't automatically update emails

So I just picked up a S3 from AT&T over the weekend. Just switched over from the iphone and liking everything so far.

Main problem I'm having is the phone won't automatically update my emails. It initially did, but for some reason, all of a sudden stopped doing it. I have to manually go into my emails and press the refresh button to update.

I have the settings to sync every 30 minutes, but it's not doing it. It will go hours with new emails in my inbox, but the phone won't update automatically.

Any ideas?

Yep. Pull down your notification bar and make sure sync is turned on

What kind of email service provider are you using? With most of them the mail can be pushed so that you dont have to check manually (and save some battery in the process) - but you'll need the right client that can push your service.
