Won't stay turned off

Hello! I have a Motorola Atrix 4G (MB860) and I am trying to root it. To root it, phone needs to be plugged in and turned off, which seems impossible actually. Whenever I turn it off, it turns back off again, and I have noticed by looking around on the internet that it actually is impossible. So, after all, I still have no solution and am looking for an application or something that allows it to stay turned off. Should I remove the battery, or is that a stupid idea? Sorry for the stupid question!
