There's a few charades type games, only phone needed but for two or more people. There's one I use sometimes for English corners, it uses the camera and records the person trying to tell the other person holding the phone what the word is on the screen, and then you can play it back to them.

Often free games have ads, because that's how the devs makes their money, paid ones shouldn't though.

Bonza is pretty good. A connection might be required for the daily puzzle and to download new puzzle packs but otherwise I don't think you need a connection.

Some games that have adverts will still work if there is no connection, it depends how the game has been written....

To that end, I stumbled across Shortyz Crosswords shortly after I got my Nexus One, and it's one of the only apps I can think of that has always been installed on my primary device. It's a very, very good crossword "client" (for lack of a better term). You can download all of the day's crosswords in a single go and work them at your own pace without requiring a data connection - until you need to get more puzzles, of course.
