Working At Best Buy Mobile

So I was hired today to work for Best Buy Mobile.

I was really torn between two different places. I was in the hiring process to work at Target Mobile. I was going to be the only other person working there, besides the manager. Promised a ton of hours. Individual commission. Really cool manager, gave me his cell phone number. And promised a steady, planned out schedule.

But I felt like I had a lot more opportunity at Best Buy. I had 3 interviews. 1 phone interview, 1 interview with the mobile department sales manager, and one with the store manager. Everyone there seems really nice. In a few months they'll be flying me to either Denver or Los Angeles from Seattle to do training...I guess to become some sort of an expert. Even though I'll still be working before I do training.

There's other benefits too, like the fact that it's in the mall, and right across the street from my gym. It's an electronics store, and I do PC builds in my personal time, and BB Mobile employees are cross trained apparently with computer stuff.

I picked up on a few things though...

It seems really competitive there! The store manager told me whoever does the best work in sales, gets the most amount of hours. You don't really seem to have a regular schedule either.

I was offered the Best Buy position first though, and Target Mobile dragged their feet too long. I don't know what kind of money I'd be making either way. My wage will be $9.75 (minimum wage here is $9.04). I just don't want it to be one of those situations where I never know when I'm working, and I'm not making crap. I'm trying to pay my way through school here, and so I'm going to need hours...and the last thing I want to do is never have friends, because I can't tell them when I can and can't hang out.

I just took the first offer that came to me though, and I feel like it's a bigger business, with more opportunity. Just had to sacrifice a few possible things that would make the other job comfortable.

Does anyone here work for Best Buy Mobile? Can you talk a little about what it's like? How big is your store, and do you make a fair amount of money? Is it as competitive as it seems?

You don't make commission at Best Buy, it's all hourly, but you still have to sell a certain amount of services and useless warranties. Good luck...you're going to need it.

Yeah, it's just like commission based sales without all that bothersome money for your efforts.

I can't speak from personal experience, but I work with a couple of guys who used to work for Best Buy. One worked as the "Apple expert" but worked the rest of the store too, and another worked in the Geek Squad. Both say a lot of awful things. Bad management, bad training, pushing to just sell stuff rather than be helpful, etc. They both worked in the same store though so I don't know if it's like that across the board. I personally don't like working someplace where I don't have any sort of guaranteed hours but that's up to you of course. I know you'll get a concession line from a carrier and a loaner phone to use to show off basically. When one of my friends worked there he carried the Thunderbolt (this is when that was the hot new phone on the block).
