I'm looking for where the sim lock proteccion resides. My intuition tells me its the modem firmware. Any one with insight about this, please share.

Root Would replacing the modem partition remove sim lock?

Nope, it's all in the hardware sort-to-say once it's unlocked. You can erase the bootloader and install it back and it'd still be unlocked. Modem has nothing to do with this. Although some partitions carry the IMEI and some other important stuff (like EFS) so I wouldn't be going willy-nilly wiping partitions. Or modems.
