This is the price Apple charges for unlocked iPhones. The reason the contract carriers sell the iPhone for $199 is because of the contract. Despite the $650 that VM is charging, it is still cheaper to buy the phone and use the $35 plan for 2 years then it is to get the cheapest 2 year contract (standard time for an iPhone contract) from Sprint, Verizon, or AT&T (and T-Mobile, if they offered the iPhone). In fact, buying through VM and having a credit card on file that VM bills (which gives you $5 off monthly if you have an iPhone) is roughly $500 less over two years than the cheapest contract rate.

Now, granted, most of us are far happier with a $300 Evo V -- but for an iPhone it is a great deal, despite what VM is charging.

You could do that with an unlocked GSM iPhone purchased directly from Apple (which happens to be the same price as the locked, Virgin Mobile USA only CDMA iPhone).
