wpa and wep

Can someone explain to me what these are exactly. I mean know that they are security codes for wifi but what the hell do they mean exactly? and also can you have a wpa and a wep key at the same time or do i have to change it from one to the other, if so how do i do that? and what is the difference between the two? thanks in advance and sorry about this non android related question.

Wpa2 should be the minimum if you actively want to discourage a potential snooper/hacker. However if your hardware supports it, I'd use wpa-psk & wpa2-psk / aes encryption, but I know xp might not want to play with that setup.
