Help x10 update - back up required?

hi guys

My x10 has recently asked for a software update. I would like to know what is new in the update and most importantly, do I need to back up. Will be phone get flashed.

mr phone details are:
x10i
2.1-update1
base band - 2.0.49
kernal - 2.6.29
build - 2.0.2.A.0.24

thanks in advance for ur help and apologies if this has been asked before

When I ran the update I got the option to just update or update and reinstall software. I chose update and everything was still there afterwards for me. That said I sync my contacts with Google and have a copy on my SD card and have synced my apps on Appbrain so if the worst happened I can get back what I need. As long as you have the new version of Backup and Restore I would make a backup - better safe than sorry.

My one word of caution was that it took absolutely ages for my phone to boot up after the update, to the point that I thought I had bricked it but just left it to do its thing and after a good 5 mins or so it started up just fine.

updated last night thanks. the phone wasn't automatically flashed thank god, last time was a pain. All for multi touch, i actually don't know what the big deal is with MT. i'm sure i'll use it here and there.

It isn't just DT that it adds, there is other functionality that the update adds as well as better performance and a new baseband. I agree that DT isn't such a big deal as I barely use (apart from some games and a few other things but still) but I'm glad that we at least have the option to use it.

The dual touch is quite nice on photo's altho it doesn't work in Mediascape for viewing them, you could download Gallery Shortcut by miyavi free from the market or create your own if you are using an alternative launcher like ADW or Launcher Pro.

I can't believe it still doesn't have flash support. Almost every other site I'm on now needs flash for basic pages now.

Flash support is native to 2.2. If you want Flash, you'll have to install one of the 2.2 ROMs that can be found at XDA.

I agree that it should have been something that SE added to their 2.1 ROM but they seem to be jumping (flag)ship on the X10 as far as Android OS updates go.

Sorry, jumping ship as in they'll stop doing updates for the x10?

No, they aren't done with updates to the X10, just that they are no longer going to update the Android OS (i.e., they won't update it from 2.1 to 2.2 or 2.3).

That's what I was hoping wouldn't happen. So no flash forever.

No, I have a 2.2 ROM running on my X10 right now and Flash is working just fine. It just means that there won't be any OFFICIAL update from SE that will give us Flash.
