Any help greatly appreciated!

Im looking to upgrade my current PC preferably CPU/More Ram/SSD/GPU

I mainly surf the web, encode video with handbrake and burn movies to DVD with convert X to dvd. Plus I use server programs/apps for ios and android to access my video content on my pc. No gaming

Right now I'm running a phenom II x2 555 black edition overclocked to 3.9

on this board Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-880GMA-UD2H AM3 AMD 880G HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

with this ram (and plan on adding 2 more of these)
Newegg.com - G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL8D-4GBRM

and this HDD
Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

What I PLAN to get:

I'm leaning towards the X4 965 since its easy to overclock and its only $90 at micro center. Micro Center - AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition 3.4GHz Boxed Processor HDZ965FBGMBOX

and this SSD
Micro Center - OCZ Technology Vertex 3 SSD Series 90GB 2.5" Solid State Drive VTX3-25SAT3-90G

And this GPU
Micro Center - Zotac ZT-50604-10L Zotac NVIDIA GeForce 520 64-bit 1024MB GDDR3 PCIe 2.0 x16 Video Card ZT-50604-10L

Im also considering the i5-3570k it would cost me about $164 more that I really dont wanna spend. is the i5 overkill for what I would be doing?

Well being as you just planning on upgrading your current build stick with the AMD processor, or you would also have to find a new mother board. I have a black edition in my parents pc that it came with though i think it is 6 or 8 cores. AMD is good, beats intels price, though they are not the same haha.

OCZ has good remarks for their SSDs. it was between that and Sandisk for mine.

The gpu seems decent, 1GB GDDR3

You're not doing a whole lot that you would see a big improvement by purchasing the i5.. so I think with what you are thinking you should be good
:)

I was definitely thinking the i5 would be excessive for my tasks.

I think I'm going to build a new x4 965 system

and use what im currently running as a server. Im working on underclocking I've got it down to 1.6ghz from 3.2 and ive got the vcore down to 1.300 from 1.425 running smooth only thing I need is 4 more gb of ram since im only running 4 right now.

I have to concur with pbf. While the i5 is clearly superior, unless you plan on grabbing a new MoBo just stick with the AMD platform.

i did realize I had to get a new mobo for an i5 that why i said it would be more expensive. I did end up going for the i5 because I felt that the 965 would not be a big step up from what i already have. I also got lucky on craigslist and bought an Sapphire Radeon 5830 hd for only $40.
