Yahoo Messenger use data or text

I downloaded the Yahoo messenger off the marketplace and wonder if this is using data or text? Main person I text is my wife and didn't want unlimited texting anymore. We do have google voice setup but want a messenger app.

Correct. For the app, it uses data. That link is for non smartphones that can send and receive via text. But obviously you would know if you are sending a text as you would be using the messaging app.
