Yet more Tasker questions

I have a new Samsung Galaxy S and in looking for ways to maximize the battery I came across Tasker. I'm in the trial period (just downloaded today), am very excited by what this app seems capable of, but I know nothing at all about programming code and am getting that drowning feeling. I read through the wiki page, glanced through the Google groups and read as much of the user's guide as made sense, and still I feel lost.

However, the first task I did create turns on the data connection only when certain apps are used, and that alone makes it worth the purchase price if you ask me :)

I should add I previously used Settings Profiles which served me fine with my previous phone, but the battery on the Samsung really surprised me with its short lifespan (of course, my old phone couldn't run Angry Birds, so I blame that largely).

I don't have terribly complicated needs, I never mess around with Wifi or GPS enough that manually toggling them is too much of a bother. Basically these are the things I'm hoping to do with Tasker:

1) First and foremost: a repeating SMS notification. One of the Samsung's few flaws is the lack of an LED light, so this is pretty crucial. I've found plenty of other apps that do this, but am in love with the idea of squeezing as much functionality out of Tasker as I can. I did it with Settings Profiles very easily. Tasker, from what I've found, will only give one notification, I can't work out how to get it to repeat. I downloaded the profile file from the wiki page but that didn't seem to have a repeat function either, or if it did I didn't recognize it (see above where I know nothing about programming code). And also under SMS, is there a way to turn on data just to send an MMS?

2) Turning on auto-syncing only between X o'clock to X o'clock, and only once every X minutes then off again. I actually figured this out, but it seems the data connection then stays on after doing the sync. How to turn this off again in Tasker? In fact, can I set something to ensure that "data off" is the default position? A work-around might be the Synker app, but again there's that hoping to consolidate a hundred other apps into Tasker (plus there might be an issue with Synker -- it worked the first few times, but suddenly now the data connection doesn't turn on when I use it, despite still being checked under the profile. ??). (Edit: just discovered how to use Synker as plug-in rather than widget. Hopefully that fixes that)

3) This would be awesome, but I suspect might be beyond Tasker's capabilities. When the phone is rebooted, any apps that are on the storage card lose their icons on my home screen (replaced with generic android icon). I can go into my LiveHome settings and reset them, but obviously this is a pain. Is there any way at all for Tasker to do this? (This might become a non-issue since I bought an extra battery and external charger, and have just verified that hot swapping is possible).

With time I'm sure I might come up with more, but for now this is my very basic wish list. I'd appreciate any help someone can give me. There should be a "Tasker for Dummies" book, because it seems like a really great app but it's frustrating starting to create a task and then coming up against a wall with a big "%" on it. I repeat, I know NOTHING about programming codes.

Thanks! ;)

2) Periodic Data Check (Juicedefender Replacement) - Tasker Wiki

3) Tasker cannot create homescreen shortcuts or widgets automatically.

They might not seem like they are complicated, but having to put in every step to make them work the way you want is actually a lot more complex than it seems on the outside.

I appreciate the reply. I had discovered the WorkPager article before and had high hopes. But it still seems to assume some knowledge of code which I do not have any of, at all. As soon as the % signs start popping up, my mind starts drifting elsewhere. I mean, how do I get the screens pictured in the article? For instance, to set up a received text profile (which remember I need as a repeating alert), I hit "new," choose "event," which has "received text" right in it. Fantastic, but then it brings me to nothing resembling the article's screen shots and I'm left floundering again.

Is there anywhere that breaks this down to "Hit this button. Then type in this '_________.' Then hit enter."? I really need super beginner, I am an idiot, assume I know nothing level (and I'm sure I'm not the only one).

To be honest, that page breaks it down almost as clear as it can\will get... Just take it one step at a time.
It actually IS telling you what to hit, and what to type, and when, and where...

Okay. I'm willing to take it one step at a time, I'm just having a hard time finding step one ;)

For instance, in the WorkPager article, I don't need all the extra steps to unmute the phone, etc. Where do I start just to get a repeated notification that I have an unread text? I jumped right in willy-nilly and added the :%VSMSREPEAT~On" field (which was a HUGE step forward for me lol), but that didn't seem to do it.

Thanks :)

No problem! (Btw - I apologize if I came off as being a "dick" in my last post)
Just scroll down to "SETUP INSTRUCTIONS"

It starts out explaining what TASKS to create (if you don't know how to create just a task, without a context, just go into Tasker and tap "Tasks" then "New Task").

Full Audio

  • AUDIO: Silent Mode - Off
  • AUDIO: Notification Volume - 7
  • AUDIO: Ringer Volume - 7
  • AUDIO: Media Volume - 15
  • AUDIO: In-Call Volume - 5
  • AUDIO: Vibrate On Notify - On

Sleep Audio

  • AUDIO: Silent Mode - On
  • AUDIO: Vibrate On Notify - Off
I put some other settings in here like WIFI On. You can add as you see fit but for the scope of this doc it is audio only.

DisableProfiles

For every profile *EXCEPT* the Page and UnlockVariableSets action profiles add a step:
*TASKER: Profile Status
Name yournamehere Set Off

EnableProfiles
For every profile add a step:
*TASKER: Profile Status
Name yournamehere Set On
The four things quoted above, are each TASKS.
In the example shown on the site for the DisableProfiles and EnableProfiles tasks, there is one for "Home" "Work" and "Sleep" (There is ONE DisableProfiles and ONE EnableProfiles task, but within that task, there are 3 "steps" that are as explained - just one says "Home" where the instructions says "yournamehere").

Once you finish with these tasks, then there is the "PagerAction" set of instructions - which is another task that you need to create.
Each step tells you what to tap (for example: "TASKER: Perform Task
Name: DisableProfiles Stop Off" means to tap the TASKER type of task, then Perform Task, fill the name field in with "DisableProfiles" and in the Stop field, choose "Off").

The rest of the sections are for the profiles\contexts.
HOME Profile, SLEEP Profile, ACTION PROFILES, etc.

Don't be afraid to ask more questions... This definitely is one of the more confusing set of instructions for a TASKER profile. But once you complete this, you will learn a LOT about the capabilities of this amazing application - and you won't be able to put it down!
About 2 weeks ago, I downloaded TASKER and the first task I entered in (While reading a set of long\daunting instructions), was an elaborate one to turn on WiFi when I am home (according to my cell location), and also automatically connect to my specific WiFi network. This was VERY confusing, but it taught me SO much about TASKER, that I just haven't been able to stop creating tasks!!

No worries -- I'm trying hard not to come off as a lazy entitlement queen who wants everything done for me (though I certainly wouldn't mind if it was) ;)

I'm starting to get it now a bit...I didn't make the connection before that the headings were actual function buttons in Tasker. Boy, no one is kidding when they say this has a steep learning curve. I'm starting to think I need to take vacation time off of work to play with it! I think I know enough now to do a bit more damage, though I'm sure this board hasn't heard the last of me! Muchas gracias ;)

No problem! Hahaha
When you browse around the Tasker Wiki, and these forums, you will feel the need\urge to create more tasks! :p

If you would like, check out my list of Tasker Profiles -- let me know if you would like the step-by-step for any of them...

I think you're right about wanting to create more tasks, haha.

I checked out your profiles. I experimented with wallpaper switching last night. I have an app currently called WallSwitch that does it. I have about 30 backgrounds that the app rotates once an hour. I tried making it a timed event in Tasker but couldn't find an easier way besides adding each background one at a time as a task, but even that didn't work I don't think. Do I need to specify a time for each background? That would be a drag....

Yeah, that is the one downside...
There MAY be a way to automatically import all of the backgrounds, with an automated "wait" time between them (perhaps something in variables?) - but I haven't given that much thought, since I only have a handful of backgrounds that I want it to switch between.
And yes, you have to specify a time between each one. Once you add the task to change the wallpaper, you then need a "wait" task (Tasker > Wait) and then you specify the amount of time you want to go by before going on to the next task\switch.

So for 30 wallpapers, I think a dedicated app would be better...

EDIT: Tasker CAN replace a good amount of apps that you are probably using, but it may be a bit of an extra pain getting Tasker setup to replace those apps.
For me, I want as few apps as possible - so I have Tasker replacing my old alarm-clock app, a to-do app, along with a few other ones.

Yeah, I went a little crazy with the Coveroid app and found too many nice backgrounds to narrow it down :o

Maybe will stick with WallSwitch for now. Maybe I'll play with it when I get bored at my overnight job. I know what you mean about cutting down number of apps as much as possible. The Samsung only has 512mb of internal storage, so I'm driven to consolidate and pare down wherever I can.

Thanks for all your help :)
