You know you're in the future when...???

You are carrying a device in your pocket which lets you communicate with anyone on the planet, look up almost any piece of information (plus many falsehoods) the human race has produced, take photographs and videos and share them with anyone instantly, play music, watch videos, buy your groceries, pay bills, and manage your diary just by talking to it...

I was in the future back when I had a flip-phone... Now, all we are missing is a decent holodeck...

You know you're living in the future when instead of paying a housekeeper twice a week to sweep & mop, you buy a robo-vacuum thing to keep your floors (sort-of) clean.

That would be the stuff of science fiction when I was a kid!

When I was an instructor oh so many years ago, one of my courses was an automated test bench powered by a '70s-era mainframe.

I explained to my class that the PDA in my pocket (a Palm T|X) has more than enough processing power and memory (RAM and storage) to entirely replace the mainframe, if only there were an appropriate interface and application-set.

Think about how quickly technology has progressed in a short amount of time!

Very true. My first job was in tech support for the onsite Amdahl 5890 mainframe. The whole thing was massive and I can remember them boasting about their huge array of discs, providing 2GB of storage, or something ridiculously small by today's standards. The noise was incredible.
But as much as I marvel at the progress and miniaturisation of computers, there's no doubt that working there was exciting for me as a fresh faced computing graduate. Modern computer systems have no 'soul'.

Our machine room was bigger than this, and we had those washing machine style removable Winchester discs, and tape drives. The place was almost alive. Plus I had the power of super user access to anything! We didn't have to wear white lab coats though. :D

The storage device that I use now is as small as my fingernail and can store up to 128 Gb of space while back when I was a kid my storage device was a floppy disk the bigger than a credit card and can only store 3.5mb of space

I can communicate with people all over the world from all walks of life about a common interest like phones or cars instantly.
