"Your device is now ringing" text??!

The Pancake

Lurker
Got a message from the wife saying "Your device is now ringing". Txted her back and asked what did you mean. She responded with, I didn't send that txt at all. Compared txt log histories, and sure enough, it there as a received msg on my iPhone 5s and not as a sent message on her Samsung G3.

Hacks? Spyware? Droid find your phone feature?

Welcome to Android Forums. :)

It's possible to ring your phone remotely using Android Device Manager. Perhaps your wife had you set up as an alternate contact on her Google account and you got a notification? Just guessing here, but that sounds like a legitimate reason for the text.

Hi lunatic59! Thanks for the welcome and reply. I'm a Droid newb, and so is the wife. Where do I go to check those settings on her Galaxy S3?

I have a nexus 4 and I don't think the settings are in the same place as they are on the S3. When I get home, I'll check my wife's S3 (is the S3 a "chick phone"? ;) ) and see if I can find it for you.

Thanks for the help!

Lol. Does she also have a white S3 with a pink case? ;)

Sorry, I wasn't able to find it. I can see where you setup ADM, but not where you can unlink a device. Hmmm ... little more research is in order.

Thanks for looking! Yeah, it's a bit odd; I played with her phone last night too, but wasn't able to come up with anything. I don't see how it's linked to my number though either. x 1 billion

Hi, my girl and I use an app called "Where's my droid", I get that text back when I text the ring key word to her phone from my phone, it doesn't show up on her's as being sent. Same with the gps keyword to get the location of the phone. Don't know if you are using such an app, but hope I've helped in some way.

Crap, that's it!! When I type GPS, I get "Attention word received, Getting GPS location. Please wait up to 5 mins for a response".

Now the real mystery is, is this a standard G3 feature or does she need to have a "Where's my Droid" (or similar) app installed? I don't have her phone in front of me so I can't see what apps she has

Sounds exactly like Where's my droid, go into her apps and see, should be easy to spot. It doesn't come standard, has to be installed by the user. The key words can be changed if you want to keep the app, it's been very useful for us when my girl friend misplaces her phone.

You could try running in Safe Mode (Disabling all apps you added without uninstalling them). If it stops it was caused by an app that you added.

Android Device Manager has the capability to remotely request that a phone ring (to help find one that is misplaced).
