YouTube video to mp4 for offline viewing

Hi

On Ubnuntu it is possible to grab the raw flv file from /tmp after the browser has fully cached it.

I want to take this file and drop it onto the phone (HTC Desire in my case) to watch offline. But the video format is not supported.

Using ffmpeg I tried to convert it to different supported types (wmv, mp4), but it still does not play.

Is there any prescribed way of doing this?

Thanks!

Higher quality Youtube videos are already in the MP4 format FYI.

Although you still might need to convert them.

There are apps for Android to download videos straight from the phone though.

Not all mp4s are created equal.

It's probably the bitrate that's stopping the mp4 file from working. I found this out when trying to get mp4's I had running on my PSP to run on my G2 Touch. The PSP can run mp4's with a much higher bitrate than my Android phone. If I played the same mp4's on my handset, I could hear them but got a bright green screen every time.

I'm not sure if different versions of the Android OS or different handsets can handle varying maximum bitrates for mp4 files, but if I was a betting man I'd bet that's probably the reason why they aren't working.

I just use tubedroid to download them directly to my phone. It downloads highest quality possible. All YouTube rippers are no longer available in the market so you have to find the apk somewhere else.
