ZTE Grand X4 Duplicate Contacts

I have duplicate contacts. 2, 3, or even 4 copies exist. If I delete one, I delete them all. I'm only linked to my Gmail contacts. There aren't any saved on my phone. If I try to merge/join them (by selecting one) the others disappear on the selection screen. If I can't figure it out, I guess the solution is to simply ignore it. It doesn't seem to affect anything, it just looks annoying.

Check the play store and do a search for duplicate contact

I don't know what the problem really was, but I deleted my Google account from my phone and then resynced. That fixed the problem.
