Android Manifest APPCache deprecation?

We have an application that contains a webview that uses html5 appcache api with a manifest file on the server.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cache_manifest_in_HTML5

The use of cache manifest is obsolete, reports chrome on the desktop.

[Deprecation] Application Cache API manifest selection is deprecated and will be removed in M82, around April 2020. See https://www.chromestatus.com/features/6192449487634432 for more details.

We need to know how long the appcache will continue to work, in an android webview.
https://developer.android.com/reference/android/webkit/WebSettings#setAppCacheEnabled(boolean)

It is safe to continue using the cache manifest in an android app? and if it is not, how much time do we have to adapt our application?

Mods How about a prompt to switch on Mobile Data?

The other day while out and about, I tried to access Google Maps on my Samsung Galaxy A3. The app opened, a map was displayed, and I typed in the location to which I wanted directions. The app responded with, "Can't connect to Maps. Try again in a few minutes", with a 'Try again' link/button below. I tried again, and again, each time with the same result.

I was baffled; the app had opened, shown me a map, and according to the 'bars' I had a very strong signal, so why wouldn't it work? I was at risk of being late for an important medical appointment, and hugely frustrated that modern technology was, as I saw it, letting me down. Much later, having had to (horror of horrors!) ask someone for directions, it became apparent that Mobile Data was switched off.

I appreciate fully that switching off Mobile Data was something I must have done at some point, but I don't remember doing so, and certainly didn't do it intentionally (Maps had worked fine a few days previously, and I hadn't fiddled with any settings since). I've been a smart phone user for a couple of years and consider myself reasonably 'tech savvy', but the complexity and sophistication of modern mobiles boggles my mind. I understand that they use WiFi, Bluetooth, 4G (and, for all I know, magic moonbeams!) to communicate with the world, but have no clear idea about 'which does what'.

My question is, given the incredible capabilities of the Android OS, why couldn't my attempts to use the app have invoked a prompt to take the necessary action (i.e. switch Mobile Data back on), instead of the unhelpful, Magic 8 Ball-style, "Try again later" response?

I'd be amazed if I'm the only person to whom this kind of thing happens, and I find it hard to believe that the OS doesn't have the capability to check why an app can't do what the user wants and tell them how to fix it. Any thoughts? Am I missing something blindingly obvious, other than the ability to use my phone competently, that is? ;)

Can you wrap thrid party libs in a AAR without expose them ?

I'm building an AAR and I want to include some libs in the AAR. I have mange to include some of the libs in my AAR and it works fine. However some libs I need to include this" maven { url "A.B.C "} " in the app who are using the AAR. My guess is that the libs aren't in the https://mvnrepository.com/.

I don't want to expose the libs that I am using for my AAR.
Is there a way include them without the maven { url "A.B.C "} ?

Help Activity zone only works after restart

Looked EVERYWHERE for a solution to this problem to no avail. My entire activity zone stops working, meaning I cant access my volume/ringer, WIFI, camera, flashlight, etc. The only way I can reliably use anything in the activity zone is to restart my phone. Bought package disabler to try and see if that works but without success, clearing the cache and app data doesnt work either. Problem randomly appeared after a forced software update a few times ago. Before that, never had any issues. Now my phone cant take pictures without a 2-3 minute wait and I cant use it as a flashlight. If I'm in class and need to silence my phone, it doesnt work and I just need to turn it off. Super annoying, I find it hard to believe the only solution is restarting my phone, sometimes I need to do it multiple times a day.

Call blocking error

My mom has an LG Stylo 3 Plus from Boost mobile. Recently, her phone started blocking calls from my phone and one other for no apparent reason. There is a 'Do Not Disturb' symbol at the top, so I turned it off in settings. Every time I call it pops back up and blocks the call. I have reset the phone and done a software update, but the problem persists. There are only two numbers this happens with. I have checked for blocked numbers, and there are none. I have also verified that there is no schedule set up for Do Not Disturb. Any ideas on how to resolve?

Media page issues

I thought this deserved its own thread, as it's [possibly?] not related to the issues with the forum tweaks.

In the 'Media' area, when uploading photos I fill in assorted fields, but when viewing the photos, I'm not seeing some of them. Specifically, each image has a 'description' field, but its contents do not appear anywhere [that I've found] when viewing the photos.

I went to my album page without being logged in, and viewed some pictures. I think I tried everything that might result in seeing the descriptions, but came up empty. For example, I looked at images' 'information' tab, I viewed the album as a slideshow, I clicked on images, I scrolled down the whole page, etc., but no sign of descriptions.

Where are they? As a random visitor, I'm not seeing them.

Apps Error type 3 (somebody please help)

I've been dealing with this simple issue for quite literally six hours. My app was working perfectly fine before but now all of a sudden I'm getting a "Error type 3... Error while launching activity" error. I've rebuilt, cleaned, invalidated, uninstalled and I still haven't been able to get rid of this error. This error occurs for any project I run through my emulator, so its not just pertaining to this project. I'm a beginner so sorry if this is a dumb post but it's just infuriating me at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Thom Browne edition anyone else?

I went ahead and preordered their limited edition. Initially the ship date was March 6th but it seems to be march 9th now. It's quite expensive and only have me 310 dollars as credit for my samsung s10 plus ceramic. I may just cancel the order or keep both phones.

I would like to say I'm a power user and I'm afraid opening and closing the Z will become annoying.

I do see 2 thom browne editions on ebay for astronomical price.

I don't think they will be available again from what I can see.

Can you text message (handwriting to text) on Note 10+

Hi all;

New here and have just ordered a new phone- the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+. I'm trying to familiarize myself with the phone before it arrives to save time and frustration. I'm a note taker and writer and hate texting. I cannot seem to find anywhere online if this device works on the messaging app. I see that with the s pen you can write documents, emails etc. but have not not found anything that says it works with text messaging. I even tried the Samsung chat and the guy online had no idea, so that was useless!! Can anyone help?

Best Two Way Mobile Radio Internet?

Does anybody have any experience with PositionPTT Push To Talk for Two Way Radio Mobile internet service? I remember seeing it mentioned here a while back, but can't find the post.

I live in a rural area and my only options for internet are pretty much satellite or Two Way Mobile Radio service. Two years ago, Verizon flat out lied about their home internet service to get me to sign up, my contract is finally up.

Is PositionPTT Two Way Mobile actually Mobile Radio, meaning there is no data caps, no throttling, etc? This would be hooked up to my router and used as whole Mobile Radio services. .

Maybe someone has a better recommendation?

PositionPTT – Push To Talk offers all-digital nationwide Push Talk mobile radio (two way radio) network to communicate across the country and around the globe That's not to say it's the cheapest or most deal-friendly Two Way Radio Wifi carrier.

Voter Canvasing App

We need an app to help with voter canvasing.
Hopefully it will have an ability to build a list of addresses, questions to ask, record the answers, and send the data to a base computer, maybe an email address.

Do you know of any such app?
Do you think this will be difficult to develop?

Thank you for your time.

Hearing Aids and Android

After ignoring my hearing deficit and putting off seeking an aid for the past five years or so I've reached the point it's time to do something. I spent the past couple of weeks doing some online research. I was exploring my options for care and device. I ran across something that disturbs me. The Cadillac, does it all, hearing aid that I desire is compatible with most all iProducts but not so for Android. Most share the ability to manage your hearing from a smartphone across both platforms but streaming tunes and phone conversations was an exclusive apple feature until just recently. It is supposedly under development for Android but from what I understand has just recently been made available to the Google Pixel line only at this time. What's up with that? There is no doubt that I need help in my hearing but I'll need help with my sanity if I can no longer stream tunes. I'm struggling to understand why the majority of smartphone users are on the back burner. And why just the Google lineup and not the Sammy, HTC, LG, etc? My Note 10+ clearly has something in place within settings>Accessibility>Hearing Enhancements>Hearing Aid Support>Bluetooth hearing aid. Clicking on the option opens a window to pair phone with aids. I guess I'll know more once I have my aids. I just don't know for certain what to buy and don't want to drop K's on something that isn't or won't be compatible.

Thanks for listening to my complaints. If you have anything to add that might be enlightening, it would be greatly appreciated. I'm without a clue basically and my appointment and fitting is next week. I long to be an educated consumer.

I found the following interesting as well:

American data
Kochkin's 2008 survey (MarkeTrak VIII) found that

  • 35 million Americans were hearing impaired, corresponding to 11.3 percent of the US population.
  • More than 25 million of them did not have a hearing aid.
  • Just 28.5 percent of hearing impaired Americans use hearing aids.
It strikes me as a potentially lucrative market to explore.
