Hello everyone,

I apologize for the text wall.

Background:
I started Android development about six months ago due to C198 @ WGU requiring I create a course scheduling app as a final project for my software development degree. My education has been kind of generalized, so I might be making some very egregious errors in the eyes of many an IT professional.

Major Problems I Have Experienced:
The first major disaster was that my files somehow changed their encoding and AS did not know what format they had been encoded into. I lost about 3 or 4 months of work because I ended up scrapping all those files.

The second issue I encountered was with using OneDrive to back up my project. I made the mistake of not closing it out on one of my PCs and I somehow never updated the backup. Also, I was actually storing and opening the project from a OneDrive directory, which was probably not very well thought out.

The third issue I have had is that the virtual devices do not seem to be very stable on my infrastructure. I have had to create new virtual devices due to some eventually failing to start up entirely. Also, I have had issues where my PC crashes due to some sort of memory leak? I'm not sure what else could be causing it.

This last time all my Java files have disappeared from my project folder. I downloaded my project from a repository on Github, as I had pushed the project a few days ago, and half of my files are missing. (settings.gradle, etc.)
Does anyone have any tips on maintaining a complete copy of a project while also avoiding encoding mishaps? So far, the only way I have noticed to reliably save my files is to zip the project and email a copy to myself, but I think I grew complacent in the past month.

I am on Windows 10 x64 on an AMD chipset and am using ASv3.4.

TL;DR - Android is killing me. Please send help.

Sincerely,
Andrew

Screenshot app that actually works

I'm looking for one that really does take screenshots, shows them, shows how to use itself, and doesn't have a bunch of annoying ads and/or intrusive permissions. Smart Touch and Screenshot Easy are apparently not it. If I can't use the off button on the right side of the S5, then I need something else for screenshots. What I've been doing for maybe a day is taking photos of the "old" phone's screen with the "new" one's camera. That doesn't work very well

Screen is amber colored

Help. Please. I was reading something the other night and thought I was turning on the night setting, but it changed the screen to this orangy tanny color that has stayed there. No, my blue light thing isn't on, and I can't find where I did this. I have a Note 9, and don't see anything in the phones settings that would do this. All I want is my normal screen back. Please help, it's driving me nuts!

Amber Alerts on Samsung A5 (2017)

Is there any way to stop Amber Alerts on my phone from signalling again and again and again until I click OK?

I have a Samsung A5 (2017). My area, Ontario in Canada, recently implemented a system of sending Amber alerts to all smart phone owners in Ontario. That's great and I support the initiative. However, I am not completely delighted with the actual implementation, at least as it affects me.

We had an Amber Alert this morning, just after 5am, when I was fast asleep. My phone was a few feet away, charging, and the volume was quite low. I think I managed to sleep through the first message but a few minutes later, the emergency tone sounded again. And then again and again and again, at shortish intervals - a few minutes but I wasn't timing them - and the cycle didn't stop until I got out of bed and clicked OK on the Amber Alert message. I confirmed that only one Amber Alert had come in but the phone kept nagging me about it until I finally clicked OK. In other words, it was acting much like an "automatic snooze button", if I can put it that way, because it kept telling me about this alert until I clicked OK.

A second alert occurred about 40 minutes later (for the same child but this time in English AND French instead of just in English) and this time I got up right away to click the OK and there were no further messages. As you can imagine these alerts were very disruptive to my sleep. I already have issues with not being to fall back asleep when awakened.

I'm wondering if it's a setting on my phone that causes it to re-signal me until I press OK? I realize it may be the way the Amber Alert system is implemented and outside of my control but if I can adjust my phone to only signal me ONCE per Amber Alert, my sleep will be much less disrupted; then I can potentially sleep right through the signal or, at worst, fall back asleep quickly if it does happen without having to get out of bed.

While I'm asking questions, let me ask one more. I know my phone has a motion sensor; I'm betting quite a few phones do now. Would it be possible for the people who administer the Amber Alerts to detect that my phone is stationary and hasn't moved for a while? I want to suggest to them that they check for that and *not* notify people that are a substantial distance from the missing child's presumed path, especially if their phone hasn't moved for a couple of hours, since such people are likely to be sleeping. But I don't want to suggest this if it isn't possible; that would just waste their time.

Sorry for the long-winded post but I wanted to be very clear.

Brand new (to me!) device!

Hello everyone!
It's been quite a bit since I logged on here but wanted to check out this forum for the S21 Ultra. (Verizon variant)
I just got my device today and will be retiring my 3 year old LG G7 ThinQ.

I haven't even turned it on yet because once I do, I'll spend hours on end setting it up and tweaking it to my liking and can't afford to be sleepy at work the next day :p

In the meantime, I am watching videos and getting up to snuff on the workings of the S21. :)

I may delve into it this weekend when I have more time.

I see @ironass has quite a bit of info in his threads here, so checking those out too! (Good job my friend!!
Remember me?!) :)

I'll check back here later and may get more involved in this site and re-kindle my Android obsession :D

See you guys!

Math problem escapes me :(

Since I’m having an issue with this math problem, I’m calling on anyone good with math skills :)

This may seem easy to some of you but not for me :)

I’ll try to explain this as best I can.

I submit work orders for work done on trucks through a 3rd party for approval. They approve my total amount, I do the work, they deposit the money in our bank account less a certain percentage.

I know the percentage, but let’s say I didn’t know it. How would I figure out the percentage?

For example:

Work order totals $607.67.

After work is done, they deposit $583.37 into our account.

What percentage did they just take (4%, 5%)?? What is the percentage amount (in dollars)? And, more importantly, what is the formula to figure that out????

In my mind, the formula would be:
607.67 - 607.67x = 583.37 ??

I used to know this but, ya know, you don’t use it, you lose it :D

Thanks

Separating private Google account form the development account?

Hello,

I am planning to release my little Android app. Now, I am asking my self if I should create a separate Google account for my app(s) and creating a Developer Console account there. Shall I separate the private Google account from a development account?

What is your opinion? How do you handle this? Do you have multiple Google accounts? A private one and one for your apps.

Thank you for your help.

Hello

hi, I'm Galdhrim and I joined the forum to ask opinions/experiences about the phone I intend to buy.

I'm currently using an old and faithful Moto G (1st gen), which has the (for me) perfect size, nice battery endurance, runs the silly apps I like, and fits in my pockets. Unfortunately, despite it resulted a very durable device, the world has moved on, and it no longer has enough storage and RAM to deal with all the current stuff.

My first smartphone was a Moto E (1st gen), then I upgraded to the moto G, and.. well, I guess that's all.

Galaxy C5000 fingerprint problem

Hello.

My galaxy C5000 running on Android 8.0 now. 2 years i have been using it upgrading periodically from android 6. i never had issues with finger print before. The phone never rooted.
few month ago upgraded to android 8.0 was working well then another update came by samsung saying some kind of security and other update patches so i did it. i guess after that my phone started indicating popups fingerprint sensor not responding if you see it repeatedly restart the phone. free ringtone
i did several times sometimes worked sometimes not. then i did firmware installation and reset via odin which downloaded samsung official site as i know. after it worked for some days but now not responding. now sometimes fingerprint starts working by itself and the stops again. i cannot identify whether its a phsyical damage or software problem. now the questions are:
1) is it a software or a hardware problem?
2) can it be related to last security update pach (with the volume of up to 200 mb) which was after android 8.0 installation?
3) can reverse back to android 7 from android 8? samsung galaxy s23 ultra ringtone

Thank you for your patience and help.

How good are the sensors?

Hello,
I'd like to know if somebody has tried apps like compass or protractor in Moto G6. I've been using the apps from "smart tools" on my G1, and I like them a lot, but when I tried them in my mother's G5, I found the sensors don't seem to work very well (G5 doesn't have magnetometer, so no compass, and 1 of the axis of accelerometer doesn't seem to cover the whole range).

I've checked the specifications of G6 and it "should" work fine, but I thought I better ask other users about their experience before buying it.

Random voice coming from android phone!

Hello

have a huawei mate 20 pro, running on Rogers Canada. After the most recent update 3 days ago, a random male voice comes out from the phone sporadically. Says a 3 seconds phrase. Sound like a guy talking in Hindu. Says always the same phrase (which I don't understand). It could happen anytime does not matter if Im using the phone or not. I reset the phone to factory settings with all data wiped out but it still came back. Anyone know a solution or encountered the same problem?

Purchased Samsung Galaxy A6 from Virgin Mobile to Resell

I had a credit balance in my account so I used it to purchase a brand new Samsung Galaxy A6. Virgin Mobile had assured me that I could sell the locked phone to a private party. However, when I attempted to list it on sites such as Amazon, I learned that I needed to provide the phone's UPC code as part of the application process. I have repeatedly requested this from Virgin Mobile. I finally received a response which wasn't helpful. It read: "Unfortunately, we are unable to provide a UPC code." Any suggestions? The 7-day window to return the phone has passed.
