System Upgrade 1.47.651..1 (21.43 MB) Now Available

Never got notice of the update, and when I manually checked, it said it didn't exist. So, I took the advice from another thread and switched on my WiFi and checked again. Voila! It said the update was available and asked if I wanted to download it. I did so within a couple of minutes via WiFi and did the update. I was plugged in to power the whole time and everything ran smoothly. It didn't take very long. It reloaded fine, including my old wallpaper, but then I saw 5 widgets had problems loading: all of my "beautiful" widgets as well as the Android voicemail icon. I just deleted them then re-added them.

What else I noticed (also mentioned earlier in this thread):

- Icon changed for QuickOffice
- Lost my Android wallpapers
- Lost the ability to use the upper characters on my virtual keyboard when holding down the key
- Must have updated Qik because I can't uninstall "Qik for HTC Evo" from the downloads in Marketplace
- ShootMe no longer works (says I have to have ROOT access) :(
- I unplugged the phone, and the battery still showed 100%. It used to drop to 98% immediately. Dropped down to 98% within 3 minutes tho. Jury is still out on the battery issue ...

My hardware version is 0002. Phone is not rooted.

NOTE: RE-BOOTING THE PHONE FIXED THE VIRTUAL KEYBOARD ISSUE. If you are having that problem (unable to use upper characters on key press hold), then shut down your phone and re-start it. Everything was fine once I did that. :)

After the update, I did another manual check for the update and it said my phone was up to date. (Obviously, from reading about brick problems this morning, I wouldn't have installed/downloaded it again, but I was curious to see if it showed I was updated properly).

Yes, the Qik app was updated and it now allows for video chat and makes the process quite simple. My wife and I are on the EVO and the video chat worked well.

I upgraded my unrooted, unrevoked phone over my lunch hour, at about 12:15 eastern. Update went smoothly. The phone did four or five half reboots and, as reported by some other people, displayed the HTC screen for a worrying period of time before finishing. All apps work, no issues there. At about 1:50 I happened to look at the phone and it was displaying an "update available" notification. Turned the screen off and back on, and that notification was gone. Did NOT attempt to install the update a second time. ETA: My android wallpapers folder is gone, but the one I'd been using is still displayed.

my battery hasn't dropped below 90% yet and I charged it 4 hours ago. Usually it would be at around 30-40% by now. Not sure if it's just a coincedence or what.

Same here...my phone is holding a charge like I've never seen before. I suspect they updated the low-level battery monitor code. The question is...does this really reflect the state of the battery? Does it mean the battery really will last as long at it seems now?

This is rediculous that the GTalk app service keeps coming up in the "running services" window. I will kill the task and then return later after doing nothing and see it up again after about 5-15min. I dont have a task killer and i'm not rooted and its doing this.
I thought they fixed the tasks from continuing to run in the background but I guess the did the opposite with GTalk.
I even have automatically sign in unchecked yet it still runs.

The cause of the message scrollback is because for some reason your contacts is sync over and over. Uncheck it from sync and you will see the difference.

i hope i am not chiming in too early and jinx'ing it but there appears to be a HUGE difference in battery life for me. Usually my phone would have died by now at work and I am still at 67% It has been unplugged now for 4 hours. Thats still pretty bad as far as smartphones go but its a huge improvement from what I was getting.

Still noticed my message scrollback is still snapping back to the most recent message. Was hoping that would get fixed.

As long as you unchecked automatically sign in and also exit properly after use it wont eat any battery up. You can leave this running in running services.

I believe I may have found the reason why. Whenever you turn on/off Wifi or mobile network, the gTalk turns on automatically.

Sprint just posted a list of fixes that the upgrade has provided:

A warning for anyone that does the update !!!!

I downloaded and installed the update with no problem. I wanted to update my profile and prl after the update. Accidently, I tapped htc update (rather than prl update) and the EVO showed the same available update. I was suprised to see this was still available since the install just completed, so I selected the option to install (a second time) I figured that there should be no harm in installing the update a second time (worst case would be that I'd just be installing the same thing) and boy was I wrong. After the update started, I put the EVO to the side and let it do it's thing. I didn't pay attention until 10 minutes or so later when I noticed the EVO had shut down. Now, my phone is completely bricked. It won't start up, won't register when the charger is plugged in...nothing.

I tried pulling the battery, starting it up in the bootloader mode (holding the down volume while hitting the power button) I even tried pulling the mini SD card and nothing seems to work.

Right now I've got the EVO on the charger under the crazy assumption that the phone is kind of acting as though the battery was completely drained and it takes 15 or so minutes on the charger before it starts responding again....that is the ultimate shot in the dark !

In retrospect, reinstalling an update that I just installed was not the greatest idea so I take accountability for that decision.

However, there is no way that reinstalling a software update should brick the phone. Ideally, I should not have been told that there was still a software update once it installed successfully. If that doesn't happen, the update should clean up any previous install attempts before reinstalling.

As I mentioned, I'm the one that did the 2nd install. Had I not done that my phone would not be bricked. This is more of a warning to others to avoid my mistake !

That being said, I've never had an update for any device I've had that has been more destructive. It was my mistake to update again, but poor programming on HTC's part that the phone could be bricked by doing so.

Good luck to everyone else !

Looks like you and i are in the same boat...BRICKED EVOS..

Earlier this morning i successfully installed the HC software update...then my phone began to download the system update ( firmware i assume) on its own...the first update was a success with a notification stating just that...the 2nd update however failed i guess...while installing, the display just shut off...i left it alone for 10 minutes assuming it was doing its thing but then i realized the phone was NOT responding nor doing anything...i tried removing the battery, SD card, booting while holiding the volume buttons down and all and it simply will not boot...charger is no good..phone doesnt even recognize charger it simply stays off no LED nothing...tried connecting to PC and same...nothing..

so i have decided to return this Evo to radioshack using the 30 day garantee from sprint..then ill buy it at bestbuy so that i can also get their warranty..Radioshack doesnt have a warranty themselves, you gota use sprints if you buy from the shack. sprints warranty as you know will grant you a refurb unit. Bestbuy will either try to fix it and if they cannot they will grant you a NEW unit. Granted their warranty is $9.99 a month for 2 years, but its better than getting a refurb unit later down the line

i would also like to add that my Evo was NOT ROOTED...i was running stock android 2.1 since launch day, only update installed was to address Micro SD card issues

rofl fail. epic fail, man
Uh oh: That HTC EVO 4G update might be bricking phones

yeah they gotta fix this before i even think about it. my phone works perfectly the way it is anyway.

edit: and all the crap you guys are saying is being ripped out of the phone, like shootme no longer working...wtf are they doing!?

My thoughts exactly. I'm not going to even touch this until they fix these issues. My phone is fine for now. It's amazing that you try to fix a problem that only leads into more problems.

Sorry if this has been asked already, im at work and cant read every page. I have the unrevoked rooting method (not full root). if I do this update will it affect this? or do i need to use the rooted xda version? i just dont want to lose my free wireless tethering since I use that daily.

I never tried this app cause I dont really know anyone in my friends or family that has an evo. Can I try Qik with ya and see how it works. Let me know if that is possible.

thanks.

Yes, the Qik app was updated and it now allows for video chat and makes the process quite simple. My wife and I are on the EVO and the video chat worked well.
