what is the best backup app to use when your gonna switch phones? i mean everything. settings, dictionary, calendar, sms, apps, data saved by apps, etc.

I've been very satisfied with Titanium Backup (free, or $4+ for donate version with allows one-click unattended batch restore operations).

this looks good but i dont have root. im gonna be trading my eris for the dinc soon. i have apps backed up with astro, but what about the data associated with them? also, i dont want to ship back a rooted phone

Is MyBackup Pro really backupping everything so in case my phone crashes, I can restore directly all my data, all my apps, everey phone and app-setting, homescreens etc?

And this does work without root on a normal htc desire? :)

I believe yes to all with the exception of homescreens.

Yes it will work without root on you Desire.

Yeah okay, tried it and cannot backup homescreens ...
Question: Does titanium backup also work without root, perhaps in a little bit limited version?

Titanium Backup is definitely the best. Take the 20 minutes to root your phone. Well worth it.

I just use nandroid - personal preference is thru clockwork recovery but any recovery rom would be fine... and its free, does external or to sdcard.

hm, rooting makes my warranty void, right?

Yes, but you can un-do it.

Better stick with Astro.. that Titanium Backup sucks a$$!

Good luck backing up your protected apps and Market links with ASTRO!

where do people get this nandroid? nowhere to be found

It's an option in the recovery menu. You must have installed a custom recovery image for it to work. Also, it is only good for backing up your current ROM. You can't use it to transfer stuff from one ROM to another like Titanium Backup.

Keep my apps on the sd-ext partition.. backup isn't really necessary for me, but I have root and back them up when I get bored of having them on my phone. Oh yeah, I use Astro to backup files.. for some reason the protection has been removed ;)
