"Missing Droid X Real-World Give-Away" Contest (1st Post:Updated)

Someone could organize a phone number/state area list for personal updates or an offer to help navigate?

I actually did this for people on the main forums when Nine Inch Nails was hiding tickets by their venues and the GPS coordinates popped up in Google Earth. I had a system where I was the first one to get contacted about new location updates and then I sent a text to the person in the area about it and even helped some people with driving directions over the phone.

*shrug*

im down with that...id like to give my # and area out!!! if i were to get an X...i would throw something back at whoever helped me

Yes I agree.

I think they started this whole promo with a way in mind. And then realized halfway through they screwed up big time and had to fix it.

This is the way they see fit? Hiding a certificate? Really?

I think we should all post up a thread/petition protesting this contest to Verizon.

I think it is complete BS. Even though there wasn't one in GA and I wasn't expecting to find one, I was hoping someone on this thread would at least get one.

Now I don't even think we have a chance, unless we camp at a place that's already been mentioned.

I believe it has been false tweets and think Verizon handled this promo in a very bad way.

I don't know about that: Excerpt from the IRS website:

It is a common misconception that if a taxpayer does not receive a Form 1099-MISC or if the income is under $600 per payer, the income is not taxable. There is no minimum amount that a taxpayer may exclude from gross income.

Prizes and awards
Subject to certain exceptions, the cash value of prizes or awards won in a drawing, quiz show program, beauty contest, or other event, must be included on the tax return as taxable income.
Taxpayers must also report the fair market value of merchandise or products won as a prize or award, as taxable income.
For example, both a $500 cash prize and the fair market value of a new range won in a baking contest must be reported as other income on Form 1040, Line 21.

"If a prize or award is not for services performed and its value equals $600 or more, the taxpayer should receive Form 1099-MISC for the value of the prize, and the taxpayer must report this amount as other income on Form 1040. The entity that gave the taxpayer the prize or award should give or send you Form 1099-MISC. A Form 1099-MISC is not required if the prize or award is less than $600."

So basically, Verizon is not required to report the prize if it's less than $600. The winner technically has to report it as income, however unless VZW issues a 1099-MISC (which they are not required to do), there is no way that the IRS knows about it...so most people don't report it.

But how do you know if it's the FINAL clue? A lot of these clues have been saying things like 'the droid is at the Verizon store at the Mall Of America,' which is pretty specific to me.

Are they going to label it and make it even more specific? Like: "it is on NOW ON the counter at the Verizon store next to a woman with a white shirt and afro? FINAL CLUEEEEE"?

Here's my issue... The initial tweets indicate something completely different than the legal rules. They didn't post the rules until today, but the linked account has been tweeting for two weeks. Aren't those contradictory tweets "False Advertisment"? They're very misleading and are related to this contest.

I see what you are saying but what I was thinking was that these Tweets are just telling us the supposed "paths" that each Droid X is taking in its route to its final destination, along building up the specs of the phone here and there. That was just my thoughts on it.

For example on the texts from twitter...I just now received the #4 has made it to the capitol of the world one by text...how many minutes ago was it posted?

Wow this stuff is crazy!
With all the playing around of contradicting clues, waiting to post the rules, not tweeting the link to the rules, and wasting everyone's time, I can say now that this promotion is not going to help the Droid X. :(

But I'm still getting one... :D
(One-year contract though...:p)

I don't see any near Pittsburgh, so I guess I'm done.
It's been fun! ;)

Wow, so it seems like the final clue will lead you to a GPS and that GPS leads you to the certificate...because it doesn't say they will tweet the GPS coordinates.

"Dates and times of Certificate placement will vary, but the final clue of each GPS location for each Certificate will be tweeted at the time it is hidden."

im down with that...id like to give my # and area out!!! if i were to get an X...i would throw something back at whoever helped me

If anyone feels comfortable with giving me their information, I can help out. I get the updates straight to my phone and work off my computer with tweetdeck anyways, so I usually get the tweets right when they happen (plus, I only work a bit with interning right now, so I have some free time to throw around to help people).

Send me a PM if you're interested... or you can email me at gamble@stanford.edu (my name is Alex).

Just don't send me your info if you live in Southern California... I won't help you ;P

I agree with those who said they won't post GPS coordinates... that's not what the sentence means (I actually hadn't interpreted it to mean that they would post GPS coordinates until I read this thread)

It says "final clue OF each GPS location" not "final clue CONTAINING each GPS location for each Certificate" or something of the sort. I think it's meant to read like this:

"Dates and times of Certificate placement will vary, but the final clue regarding each location a Certificate is hidden at will be tweeted at the time that Certificate is hidden"

What in the world would they need to post the GPS location AFTER the certificate is found for?!
To me, "final clue OF each GPS location" means the final clue will include the GPS location... Just like if something is made OF metal, for example, metal is what the object is composed of... (yeah i know, silly example)

It said NEAR Mall of America, not "at"...

I really don't understand how people are taking that sentence and ruling out the possibility that they're going to tweet the coordinates?! To me, that's what it says!

Some people really make me question the human race. I can't believe that people are upset about how this thing has been run. Its a marketing campaign people The sole objective of this whole thing is to raise the profile of the Droid X and increase awareness. How many times have they repeated the specs. I bet everyone here has them memorized by now. I'd say its been very successful. Are there any other people in here that have taken a marketing class? Its marketing 101.

And can't you people that are complaining and talking about protesting and other garbage just appreciate the fact that they are giving out 21 free phones? Or are you too self centered that because you might not get one you don't like the contest?

Some people on this board will end up with free droid x's so lets just help where we can and be happy for them when they get them.

So this means that we can stop trying to figure out these clues and just keep hitting refresh on the twitter page until we see GPS coordinates? Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. Now the wait begins for the coordinates

I'm not taking my shoes off until this contest is over...

It didn't say it was posting the GPS coordinates, it referred to clues of the GPS coordinates:

"Dates and times of Certificate placement will vary, but the final clue of each GPS location for each Certificate will be tweeted at the time it is hidden."

HEre is the exact quote

"Dates and times of Certificate placement will vary, but the final clue of each GPS location for each Certificate will be tweeted at the time it is hidden."

They never mention posting the GPS location after the certificate is found, they say they are going to post the final clue after the certificate is hidden by the verizon employee.

I interpret it as "We're giving you a clue to a gps", "That GPS will lead you to a certificate and you have 4 hours to get there"

Hey, let's stop arguing/complaining. It is what it is! (I hate that term) So, either you are still in this, or you're not. When they post the coordiantes, or GPS locations, or whatever the hell it is gonna be, the ones who are up for it, go get it!!! I would, but I can guarantee, by the time I get there, since I am at least 45 minutes away from San Francisco, I am not getting one based on just a few folks here, and several on twitter that are in SF proper. I just want someone like WOOP to get it cuz he's our fellow hunter. Capiche?!?!?

How much do you want to bet they'll be tweeting GPS coordinates?

While I agree with you on this, and I could be wrong, it has happened before :p, we all will just have to wait and see how they do it. Anyone else agree with this? :)

I can't wrap my mind around how you interpret it like that, but I guess we'll see...
