"Missing Droid X Real-World Give-Away" Contest (1st Post:Updated)

Here's a new pattern that may or may not help. It looks like each clue is being placed near a "Verizon Business" building. I came across this yesterday after the Boston one was found. To see what I mean, put in any of the coordinates in Google Maps and then do a search for Verizon. You will see a Verizon Business within a 1 to 1 1/2 miles of each clue. Not sure if this will holdup for the other cities, but it's worth checking out.

At least Blake Ourso was following DroidLanding... 1 out of 4 so far! :/
Doesn't look like he's from the forum though.

No chance for anyone if the patterns hold up, unless you are REALLY lucky and happen to be right there when all this starts. Some people are planning to hang around areas they "think" it might be, which could be good or bad. Average Joe has to work, average Joe can't hang around an entire city all day long. I for one, have lost all hope for the one in SF (#3). I said it before, and I will say it again, BASTARDS! :(

You also have to remember not all average Joe's Work 9-5, I work at a airport and I work 4am-1pm. Also the way they are kinda doing this is around alot of people's lunch times which if you were so inclined to do so you could walk over to a location you think it is at and look.

There really isn't a time pattern here either. Most people are at the location ahead of time but being their early doesn't mean you will find it. I think today though turned alot of people off of the chase because it's way early finding, which is fine with me less people looking in my area :)

Yeah, I got to the DC place early... and saw the group of people outside the theater and thought perhaps someone found it. Got the coords a few seconds later. Walked into the chili place with a few other people and came out empty handed... a few minutes later got the text and was thought it was odd that someone had won before coords went out... kind of sucked since I was trying to be inconspicuous at the starbucks across the street waiting if I had known it was out I would have went!

@DroidDecoder just posted:

UPDATE: #21 - A lot of people are expressing concern regarding cert timing. Expect a status update between 3 - 6PM EDT regarding this issue.

This is interesting. Does this mean @DroidDecoder will be posting a status update or @DroidLanding? Is @DroidDecoder actually a VZW person? Can anyone on here confirm @DroidDecoder's identity?

Okay, if they don't want people driving around like crazy...there's very few places it could be in Orlando. For those who don't know, Orlando has very sub-par mass transit or public transit. If no one in NYC uses gas...no one in Orlando survives without a car. lol The only thing we have are Lynx Buses (public transport) and on weekdays the bus service stops between 8pm and 10pm, and 10pm and midnight on Fri and Sat. Very unreasonable as an only means of transport.

It will not be on Disney property or Universal property. Non places have cost money yet, and those places are all pay to park. Disney was $12 last month, and Universal was $10 several months ago (probably equal to Disney now).

And, factoring in locations that are open areas for pictures/videos and still un-crowded enough to hide anything: Church Street Station. Wall Street. Lake Eola (where Orlando's icon water fountain is) and Orlando's only bandshell. All of the Tea Party rallies and political events as well as holiday celebrations (like 4th of July) are at Lake Eola Park. Lake Eola is pretty big. I know I't would take me 15~25 minutes to run a lap around it...but I'm no marathon runner. lol

I like what someone said about the convention center, but that's on International Drive and talk about traffic...wow. On a weekday, in the summer, it could take 30 minutes to drive 1 mile between the crosswalks, tourists having no idea where they're going, and traffic lights.

I'm guessing Lake Eola, just because of logistics.

PS: I have no idea about other cities, but Taxis are for rich tourists in Orlando. A 10 mile trip will cost you around $40+tip. And, 10 miles in Florida is nothing. lol I drive 30 minutes each way, at 65mph on I-4 just to get to my lodge.

Anyone else have any ideas/guesses? Orlando is a massive area and Disney is the only theme park with "droids" and the convention...so I no longer think it's Tampa.

PPS: YAY!! I live so lose to Orlando. <30 min drive for me to get to Lake Eola. I'll stage there at a Panera and use their WiFi with my laptop that morning. ^_^

I've chatted with DroidDecoder about 4 times now. Extremely polite and extremely professional.....AND, they completely ignore any time I directly ask if they work for Verizon. They don't agree or disagree, just ignore...yet, they always answer every comment I send them, with a DM back to me. ^_~

I am not sure if that means they do or don't.

Droiddecoder outed a couple days ago. Definitely VZ ties are very close. Suspect they will take bull by the horns shortley. Expect big. ..good... news today regarding this giveaway. .

Ok, I just registered but have been following the thread since the start. I am in DC and I got to Ben's Chili Bowl between 1230 and 1240, but by that time it had already been found. There were 3 or 4 other people there (including the winner). They video taped me playing with the X and asked me some questions on camera about what I liked about it, what service I had, what I liked most about VZW. They had me sign a release so maybe I'll end up on youtube or something. Of course they had just given out the last gift card so I didn't get anything.

I asked the VZW person if it was really found at 12:14, she said yes, and then I said but that's before the coordinates were tweeted, to which she sidestepped and said "yep this one was pretty quick!"

I've only been living in DC for 3 weeks now and the second they mentioned chili I knew that it was at Ben's. That's how ubiquitous it is. Everyone knows about it. Which is kinda unfair considering the clue for Boston was about live lobster, where there are literally hundreds of places to get live lobster, and none of which are particularly more famous than the others (at least not comparable to Ben's).

One of the other contestants I was talking to said she was there before they tweeted the coordinates, as well as the winner and a few others. So obviously they hid it before.

This location is a little bit different than the other two. The Boston and NYC locations (I go to school in NYC and am from a suburb of Boston, so I can make this claim) are well off the beaten path, not really in any lively neighborhoods. The U Street district (the street Ben's is on) is one of the most active areas in DC. It is a very popular area for clubs/bars, restaurants, etc. so i'm kind of perplexed as to why they would choose this area. As other people have stated, it would be pretty impossible to do this in the government-y area of DC because of security there, but there are many parks, landmarks, etc. in other areas that would have been totally viable and not a dead giveaway.

Just my 2 cents. I used to think the people complaining about the inconsistencies of the contest were being irrational, but this one is a pretty big inconsistency.
