So, is it worth having an android device without a data plan?

depends on what you wanna do with your phone - in any case, you'll want to at least grab some apps from the market, but you can always find wifi internet, right?
 
If you're going to have plenty of WiFi access then you might be okay, but personally without 3G data I wouldn't bother, and would go with a cheaper phone and an iPod Touch.

For email I could seek out WiFi I guess, but I regularly use Google Maps, which would be useless without a decent 3G service.
 
Again, worth is highly subjective. Without any info on what you need/want (typical for such threads), it's impossible to even guess if it would be worth it for you or not.

First off, you do NOT need to bump a post 14 minutes after you created it, especially at 2 in the morning when a lot of people are asleep. Be calm, someone will answer your post.

Second, I wouldnt recommend it. Thats like buying a Ferrari but never taking it out of first gear. Even if you have wifi at home and work, there are tons of times when you will need it outside of there. I cant count how many times i've used my gps on the road to help me find something.

i realize of course that many people in the states are unaware of other countries, let alone continents, but you have different time zones within the usa for pete's sake

3 times - that's how often i've needed to use gps during the ~10 months i've owned my phone
point is, people have different needs and different priorities for those needs
plus depending on where you live, it's possible to pretty much always be within or very close to a public wifi hotspot
so like takeshi said, it's all very case specific
 
i can see a data plan without a phone plan but a phone plan without data???? what happens when your at dinner in the middle of a discussion and you cant pull out your phone and google the answer? if you take a wrong turn in an unfarmiliar area how willy ou get back on track? there is wifi ALOT of places... but not EVERYWHERE. and with a data plan and a root, you can have leptop internet access anywhere you get service :)

Anyways, I check Email, and Maps alot so I guess I would need a data plan. Now that I think of it, its a rather stupid question.

Are you planning on buying your phone with a subsidy? If so you are required to have a data plan. Otherwise you don't really absolutely need one. For example if you live on a college campus and they have wi-fi everywhere. It would essentially just be a really expensive iPod touch with a couple extra bells an whistles.
 
i have a question :
i dont have unlimited acces to the internet so i need a way to limit some apps from internet acces
how can i do that?
browser and youtube are the only one that need internet
 
I've had a nexus one on tmobile for the past 6 months without a data plan. I figured i'll just use it as a phone but also as a replacement mp3 player that i've been in need of and a device with awesome apps. I'm almost always around wifi too. And if there is wifi that is encrypted, well lets just say encryption can be broken ;)

The only thing so far that i wish I had a data plan for was the few times while driving in areas I don't know, but I am really good with directions so most times I don't need google maps.

My point being however though is that people's needs are different and it's completely doable to have a smartphone without a data plan, might seem kinda a waste for a device that could be enabled to do sooo much more when you'd not have a wifi connection, but it depends on the user. Just like I remember seeing the amount of data iphone users use on average was around 400mb or so a month...I use that much a day on wifi...people use different amounts. I would say try it, and you can always upgrade your plan right?
