Apps Problem with MapView

I've followed the online tutorials very closely but all I get is a grid. From what I have read this is supposed to be caused by lacking an API key, but I have my API key in the correct location in main.xml. I'm just wondering what else could be going wrong.

Try resetting your phone. I noticed that sometimes certain processes (Unsure exactly which ones) that become stuck in the background (perhaps your app or another app forgot to stop a thread?) and will cause the API to freak. It happens to me sometimes and I just restart my phone and it tends to fix it.
