Root Captivate Root

I figured it out. For some reason it was named update.zip.zip. When I opened it in AstroManager it appeared to be update.zip; however, when I chose rename it showed up as update.zip.zip.

Thanks for all your help!

yea thats what I was going to say, by default windows hides known file type extensions, so since it was already a .zip you only needed to rename it to "update" since windows doesn't let you edit the extension of a known file type by default

That's not exactly what root does. All it does is give you super permission, provided the phone allows the functionality.

so one would still need to access a computer in order to install an app outside the marketplace?

it's not easy like windows mobile where you can download a .cab file and install?

Check the forum, I have a guide posted on how to enable side-loading apps using root access.

I can't wait for tomorrow. I've been stuck with a BlackJack II for quite some time now...

I broke the screen on my Touch Pro and had to revert back to..... my 8125! That's right, an 8125! I've been in cell phone hell for the last 2 months! Don't tell me about "being stuck" with a BJ2! :D

i just tried this and my captivate is stuck on a screen with a "Downloading" text in yellow font with "Do not turn off Target!!!" right under it. Is this normal? This is my first Android phone (turned in my iPhone 3GS) so i'm obviously very new to this. Thanks!

make sure phones not plugged in when you try to go into recovery

Unfortunately it was plugged in. I never got to the screen where i could scroll with the volume buttons. Once i turned it off and turned it one while holding both volume buttons down, it went straight to the screen i mentioned above. May sound like a dumb question but should i just turn it off and try again?

Me too. Had my BJII for almost 4 years now since I haven't seen any phones I liked until the Galaxy. With the off contract price being so high now (thanks for nothing ATT), I'll have extend to get the $199. But I think I can live with the Galaxy for a year and then I should be able to upgrade again (I think I can under ATT Upgrade Advantage).

Only 3 hours of waiting left to go.....

By doing this, will I be able to install 3rd party app's on my phone, something I currently cannot do because of ATT's block on that action?

So, I just followed the root guide off xda. Was I supposed to get a message or anything after it completed? I went into the recovery, ran the update, phone rebooted and that was it...

yes you can just turn it off and try again, what you did was go into download mode, which is how you might flash a rom through odin

Is there a way to UN-root or restore back to AT&T settings for warranty reasons?

It would be great if someone can advice on how to do this before doing the root step :D

You can uninstall the superuser app, which is pretty much the only outward sign that it's rooted unless somebody tries to hook the phone up to a computer.

I followed the rootin method that was displayed above and i see the superuser application in my phone. When i try to install the wireless tether application 2.0.5.apk it says install blocked. Have i done something wrong?

Tether app is blocked by AT&T. There are several different ways you can install that, posted on the forum.

I am thinking that if you find the side-loading thread mentioned earlier, that you may be able to load it then. If not, another method is to sign up for App Brain, and use thier install. I've read that AT&T didn't block them, and that you don't need to do side loading setup for App Brain. (Not sure if that's true, as I haven't tried myself).
