Android phone vs. my iPod touch

What I'm trying to figure out is if any Android phones are comparable in music playback to the ipod. I have a mytouch (which I refell in love again now that CM6 is on it) and an ipod touch (3 years old), and the media playback on the mytouch is nowhere near as good as the ipod.
The reason I'm trying to figure this out is because I'm starting to get dead pixels on the ipod so I fear that it won't last much longer and if I could just get a better android device with comparable media playback I will then be happy and can break away from ever spending money on an ipod (mine was a gift btw). I love my mytouch but it can't play music at any sort of decent quality. So any suggestions fellow phandroids?
 
apples music player beats any android one in my opinion, but you can get a pretty good one called "btunes" which is very similar!
 
Already aware just wondering if any current android handsets are getting up there in the sound quality.
Because-
1. My ipod is dying a slow death
2. Mytouch audio playback makes my ears bleed
3. I want a new phone anyway (proj. emerald)
 
The iPod is a dedicated music player, it will have higher quality playback.

That said, it's not like the quality on phones is terrible or anything.
 
Nothing that I know of , I got rid of my Ipod Touch when I got my Incredible and while the sound isn't as good , it isn't bad . But I'm not a Audiophile I just enjoy listening to music mostly on my stock system in my Range Rover or a small stereo I hook a Moto Rokr up to . So basically unless it's my headphones I'm listening to music thru bluetooth transmitting to FM anyways I'm never gonna have that great of quality. But no complaints here with sound quality on my Incredible

I respectfully disagree with both assertions.

Why? I used to be a major supporter of the iPods-play-music-better myth for the longest time. I was proven wrong.

I have posted this elsewhere, and I'll ask you to try the same. Do a blind test. It is fairly simple to set up. Get a couple different digital music players, load them up with the same song from the same source (IOWs, the very same mp3 file). Connect them all to the same set of external speakers.

Make sure all enhancement utilities (like equalizers and such) are off or at factory settings.

Have someone hide behind a curtain with the players and alternate. Pick out the iPod.Touch/iPhone from the rest. Most people (the most extreme, freakish audiophiles excepted) cannot tell the difference in output.

I bet you cannot. I was embarrassed. :D

Now, in all fairness, extra enhancements make my argument moot.

I just know on my ipods that they got much louder then my Incredible hooked up the same exact way . I don't have the best ear for sound quality but just know after messing with the EQ the sounds is muc hbetter then my Incredible. But I guess if you don't mess with the EQ set everything to factory it probably is the same. Wish there was a good EQ for Android

and I have since gotten rid of every Ipod I've owned. I just know a dedicated Music player Zune, Ipod whatever shoudl have bettery music quality then my Phone but I'm more then happy with my 40gig Incredible
 
From my experience, iPod's have horrible sound quality compared to other MP3 players when connected to a high quality set of headphones or speakers. I don't know why. Probably because they focus too much on their interface (which is nice) and not enough on actually creating good output.

I haven't done a completely blind test, but I've listened to the same albums an iPod touch and on my Droid with the same headphones and found the iPod sound quality to be upsetting. It's generally distorted and muddy with horrible bass reproduction.

To each his own I guess, but I don't consider it a good media player. It's just a good media organizer.
 
I`ve had an Ipod touch and now have a Ipod Nano, also have a Galaxy S and I found the sound on the galaxy S better than the Nano and at least on par with the touch (dificult here cos going on memory) output on the GS is very loud too.
 
I don't even touch the my itouch anymore. I have been using my galaxy s which has a very nice library interface and it allows you to use landscape mode also so you can flip through the albums with ease. It has 5.1 stereo and it sounds pretty damn good and loud. It also has an adjustable EQ with several preset EQ's you could chose from. I haven't been able justify keeping the touch other than the fact that my wife bought it for me for christmas.
 
I was spoiled with Creative mp3 player sound quality (amazing if you have never heard one) so all other phones and mp3 players sound about the same to me, not as good as my Creative. Me and my friend did a blind test between the my Creative Zen Vision: M and his iPod, and we could both pick out the creative.

For the record, the Creative won our blind test as well. It beat out an iPod, a Nano, a BlackBerry and a Palm, IIRC.
 
Wow thank you guys. I basically wanted to know that playback quality is getting better. Also yes I can pick out the difference between the ipod and mytouch in a blind test. I also have had a Palm Pre and a Sidekick and always could tell the sound quality difference. I am a bit of an audiophile.
The main reason is that I listen to music in my vehicle and the mytouch sounds very muddy through my input but the ipod sounds amazing. I just want to be able to have just my phone for all my mobile needs. Hopefully my next one has a 4.3" screen with a dual core processor ;)
 
It seems that the SGS does mp3 decoding and EQ in hardware with the wolfson audio hub instead of giving it to the cpu.
