Oh yeah, my entire conflict about which phone to go with revolved around the D2's keyboard, and the 3 additional MPs on the X. If I can adapt comfortably to the virtual keyboard on the X, I'll have a slimmer phone with a better screen (win win), but if I truly miss having a sliding hardware keyboard, I'd rather sacrifice the few megapixels and go with something like the D2.

I don't know when/of I'd use HDMI out either... I don't see myself saying "Hey gathered extended family in my living room, let me hook up my phone to the LCD flat screen, and show you all something really neat I recorded the other day while mountain biking!" Haha, I know there are some useful situations, but I'm being tongue-in-cheek obviously.
As for the cameras having the same software, I have been reading that Android updates can make drastic differences in the quality of pictures, one European device even got upgraded to 720p HD video recording via an OTA update! So...... maybe I'm putting too much emphasis on the camera, but I sure would like the larger screen on the X! Grrrrrrrrr
Another thing about the HDMI issue is that both phones have DNLA support. So if you have something DNLA-compliant hooked up to your tv (like a ps3), you can just turn your phone into a media server and stream wirelessly to the tv. But just remember neither solution actually allows you to show your phone's screen on the tv--just certain kinds of media.
The biggest issue I have is the lack of 720p recording, but like you said, that may come via an OTA update.

What device do you own? 720p comes with the X, and the Droid 2 won't be out for 11 more days.

I was afraid of this... has it been on pre-sale for long? I wanted to make sure I could get it ON August 12th. I think I am now 90% for sure going for the Droid 2, rather than the Droid X. Thanks for any help!

Ahh ha, I see... sort of an inner circle deal - gotcha. I thought I had missed out on the official online pre-sale.
Thanks for keeping in the loop, I think the Droid 2 will be better suited for me overall, although I've debated with myself over the larger screen and the better camera on the X.

The X is, well, to big for me. I also like having a physical keyboard. And trust me, 5mp is nothing to complain about. I take awesome pictures with the 5mp camera on my Droid 1.

Very good point about the camera... I needed to hear something like that from a user with experience. It will still be a very nice upgrade from my Touch Pro 2 at any rate
I am always concerned and confused about the shutter speed and low light picture taking (or even anything indoors) with cell phones. The Droid 2 will be a nice switch for me I'm sure, but how long will it be until cell phones are viable replacements (at least a replacement without too much cringing) for point-and-shoot cameras? I read about a new type of processor coming out for cell phones in 2011 that is supposed to make them leap frog anything available right now.

I talked to a verizon CSR yesterday because i want to change my Droid X and get a Droid 2 (the size is too much for me)...he said "Ill be right back i'm going to check the official release date for the Droid 2." When he came back he said August 12.

This post alone makes me very confident in my decision to forgo the X, and get the Droid 2 instead. I don't mind losing some screen size to the X, if it means I'll have a keyboard

I think im going to exchange my X for the droid 2 also and luckily if it does launch august 12 i will have 3 days to spare for the 30 day worry free guarantee
Im in the same boat as you and i can exchange it with the worry free guarantee since its launching aug 12. Lets just hope they dont sell out like the others
