Task manager in my Samsung Galaxy S shows RAM as 326 MB. Is it not supposed to be 512 MB ? Or is it that Indian versions have a different hardware configuration ?

my Uk galaxy does the same
All Galaxy-Ss have the same RAM across the globe. The reason it shows only 326 instead of 512 is because I guess the OS reserves some amount of RAM for its internal use.
Im still wondering if the device really has a 512MB OS wide memory.. there was a thread on XDA about this.

Android 2.1 doesn't allow 512 MB of RAM. But Froyo does. So wait for the update.

i bought my galaxy s from bell 2 days ago and i just niticed that my task managed also shows only 326mb of ram but is says that 270/326mb and the phone is not showing anything running in the backgroung so do that mean 270mb of ram is being used. if so is it normal for that much ram to be used up.

I saw somewhere that it was said that the additional RAM is reserved by the system to allow the phone to continue to function when receiving or taking out calls.
Make sense to me since you still want it to function as a phone, You dont want to drop a call just because your Live Wallpaper is taking up resources.. ;-)
BTW: I can confirm that the deal is the same in Froyo..(No 512 MB)

You are correct, all of the RAM is not available for other things than the core system. That it's a shortcoming of Android 2.1 is just a myth that don't seem to want to go away.
Using Task Manager/Storage I find the following information
Internal phone storage: 138MB/1.89GB
Personal data: 7.24/127MB
Internal SD card: 722MB/5.78GB
External SD card: 7.53GB/14.83 GB
Can someone exp[lain what the first three relate to - I can see no mention of either 326 or 512MB.
I am trying to download the Alan Rogers Campsite app onto my Galaxy S I900 phone, which has been denranded, unlocked and rooted but I keep getting "insufficient space" error. I do not know the size of the Alan Rogers app but it is quite large as it includes an abbreviated campsite database. Any suggestions?
I will check size with AR on Monday when company is open.

My RAM is topping 258MB out of 329 MB. That's a little high. What can be the reason and how can I bring it down. I try to remedy the sitution by going to the Downloaded tab in the Task Manager and clearing the cache of each app. Doesn't seem to help. Can anyone help?

In Task Manager you have 4 tabs at the top. The info you mention is under the 'Storage' tab. Select the one next to it called 'RAM'. In there you will find the info relating to Ram usage. You can tap on the 'Clear memory' tab at the bottom if you wish to do that function.
I'm not pleased about the small amount of Ram available, and I'm looking for suggestions on ANY and ALL things that can be done (safely) to have more Ram available. Right now mine is at 276/329. Even after hitting the Clear memory tab it still reads 265/329. If I use my 'Android Assistant' app and hit 'Quick Boost' it reads 220/329. Then as I watch it it creeps back up to 234/329. If I hit 'Quick Boost' again it tells me "Clean up items: 5 Release memory: 820KB.
So, something's running and eating up Ram,....but at this point I don't know what they are.
Anyway, 'Android Assistant' seems to be a pretty good app for dealing with ram and other issues. You might want to give it a try.

Well, it would seem that no one has been willing or able to respond to your main question. So, that leaves at least two of us, and probably a lot more still wondering just what the answers to your question are.
As mentioned in my previous post...I just don't 'get' what in the hell is eating up so much ram. I haven't (as yet) rooted my SGS.....but I also wonder if the users that have rooted have found any more ram available after rooting their device.
I'd just like to know what 'culprit' is using up all that ram in the background. Is it 'TouchWhiz' ?
It seems that that is the reason Samsung gave for not allowing an ICS upgrade for our SGS device. Is it the memory HOG running in the background ???
I know I have access to info that tells me how much battery I've used and what used up the juice, and I have access to what software is using CPU and memory...when running....BUT I have nothing (that I know of) available to tell me WHAT is running and using up ram. So, we're still left wondering what, if anything, can be done about the situation of having a piss poor amount of ram available at any given time.
So, any of you devs or serious geeks out there wanna chime in and help us out here with some good answers on this topic? Sure would be appreciated. Thx.

Ok, fine....but what we're looking for here is SOME way to be able to keep more than a measly 10% of ram available. Any suggestions on that?
I mean, I appreciate the comment, but it still leaves us with the ongoing problem of TOO LITTLE ram left to do much with.
I've eliminated some apps, cleared cache, done this, done that....and I end up with little or no improvement on increasing available ram.
Thanks for the feedback. At least someone is trying to offer some help. If you have some suggestions on fixing the problem....then we'd love to hear about it. That goes for anyone and everyone out there. There's got to be a way to remedy the situation. All feedback is appreciated.

Guys it seems that I've encountered the same problem after I upgraded to 2.3.6 Gingerbread DDKP2...
B4 that I was on 2.2.1 Froyo the RAM of my SG SL was 284/487 but after I update it became 355/487... It wont went down any lower beside 355... I tried clearing the memory ut it ends up the same...
And ya I dun have alot of apps running in the background so I think this is kinda wierd... ==
