No one can say for sure that the two are identical!

until they pull them both apart and depict them, can we all agree that the two are more than likely the same. if not damn close. same thing happened with Droid Eris 2.1 OTA and leak 3. they were identical besides the fact OTA didn't change your HBOOT and the RUU did, and at the time locked you out of root)

I am pretty sure someone confirmed that they were the same just can't find the post. But if people want to know here is my version after RUU'

just got home from my local verizon store (san diego, ca)
they had 2 dincs on display and of course both of them were running 2.2
I first ask one of the sales reps when i would get the update. he said there slowly pushing it out. i hinted if it was a coincidence that both the display models already had it but he just gave me the same response.
 
One thing @VZWSupport is saying is you need a completely charged battery to receive the updates. Might be the reason we are seeing the updates come at night when people are charging.

not completely rediculous. they need to make sure that the update doesnt fail and make you lose all your data... and the best failsafe to make sure that you have enough battery is just to make sure its completely full.
also making peoples phones do the update while they are not in use (when on a charger) is a good idea too.
the only problem i see with this is that some people might never charge the phone to 100%.

I thought about the same thing but I don't think it's necessary because only Verizon devices are going to be trying to hit Verizon's update servers, so IP addresses shouldn't be relevant.

But who really knows except VZW server admins. :)
 
How about this :

They randomly pull a MEID out of a hat and send a notice to that cellphone, from the tower to the phone.

You accept the download. This is where 3G and/or WiFi come in. Your cellphone goes to a website and downloads the file into a specific place on your phone.

Once it is downloaded, you then say "install"

The installer on your cellphone then runs. It knows where to look in memory for the file needed.

That's actually probably not too far from the truth. They are probably doing DB queries and grabbing 10k lines of MEIDs or MDNs and sending out the binary sms.

Seriously, I believe that I read somewhere that we should have the battery 50% charged.

Well, I already got it at 100% and no froyo. That vznsupport keeps failing. :)
