Samsung - GPS Fix/Froyo

I wouldn't be so upset with the GPS issue if Samsung came out and said, you get both Froyo and GPS fix all at ounce. I can see that taken a bit of time to put together. Unfortunately, I have a feeling that is not going to happen. So it takes 4+ months to resolve a GPS issue, how long will it take for them to deliver Froyo? Instead of bashing each other here, we should focus on applying pressure to both Samsung and AT&T. Trust me, if Captivate sales come to a grinding halt or returns/complaints mount to unsustainable levels, something would be done about it.

Point taken, guess the majority here don't really care about working together as a community to have a phone working as designed. Better not hear any of you bitching come the end of the year about a GPS fix not being available.

Well, there are definitely some people who generate a lot of "noise", but as a community a bunch of us have logged complaints with CS (at both Samsung and AT&T), contacted Engadget (to the tune of them updating an article that the GPS _can't_ be "fixed" with the published tweaks), have talked to Lisa over at the Samsung twitter support page, etc.

I certainly won't be complacent if there's not something major deployed by the end of the year regarding the GPS (and I'd say at least an announcement about 2.2).

This is a shining beacon as to how to actually do something about your purchase, as opposed to whining about how someone needs to so something... Well done, sir.

The other thing I don't understand is folks who state, a non-issue for me. How can you be willing to pay $200 for a phone and not mind portions of it not working as advertised. It's this laid back approach that will allow Samsung to sit on this for as long as they need to.

Its easy to understand ...

If someone does not use the GPS, then it's a non-issue to them if it does not work. I don't use the "advertised" Italian language setting capability on my Captivate, so if Italian language menus did not work, that would be a non-issue for me.

FWIW this was posted in the Galaxy S section but the poster is in the UK.

Okay,
This will hopefully please you.
It's a reply from Samsung to parties myself, Chris & Richard at Clove

It now lets us know it will be a combined GPS Fix & Froyo release with an 'expected' date at the end of this month.
I know we were told some time back to expect it in September but this now stamps it as happening.

The bit about the 'non-talk' is my question I asked Samsung why they have been very silent in providing updated information.
I also explained to them via Clove that there is a strong lack in support service, giving no credible answers which in turn is hurting their name brand.

I'd love to see that Twitter page!!

Mike - you should have already received this reply
Hi Mike, (and Chris and Richard),

The latest information I have is that the GPS fix is included in the Froyo update which is currently being tested internally before release. This update will be available via home update on the Kies software. The current timeline for this is that it will be available at the end of September.

With regards to the “non-talk” comment, we do have a Twitter page which customers can follow, but it has not been a major issue so far. Where is the forum you are referring to by the way? I cannot find it on your Clove website.

Kind regards
Regards

OK If this is true, THEN... Direct Samsung to customers Kies update release will probably NOT be approved by AT&T. AT&T would want to push the update over the air perhaps, and would add another couple of months for porting the bloatware and doing internal testing before the update is released?

Kies isn't even officially made available to or supported in the USA. So using Kies as the distribution method would require some significant shifts in policy and tool offerings.

at least Apple makes an effort to address the issues.

You mean, like taking a poorly R&D'd product, with a serious antenna issue and throwing it out onto the market, where the "fix" is what basically amounts to a rubber-band?

Or perhaps you meant their response, which at first was a non-response... then telling people they were mistaken and finally, taking other phones from other manufactures, applying a death grip on them... and saying, "See... they have signal issues also!"

So basically, Apple is ignoring the problem and just hoping the sheeple shut-up and go along with the words of a maniacal egomaniac, named Steve Jobs.

Yeah, that Apple sure is on the ball, when it comes to addressing issues.

What a poor response. I am about to get a captivate in 2 weeks, so i can expect or demand a working phone.
But to explain away poor customer service by samsung and lack of communication in solving this.......

...you point out an equally poor example (aka apple) for their mess.

How do two wrongs make a right? answer..they dont. How does talking about a craptastic example of doing PR and customer service wrong by apple...make the poor reaction by samsung any better?
The example that samsung is creating....thru lack of urgent fixes...is equally bad.

I love your approach....not...

...heck if i went into your restaurant and got food poisoning....when confronted you would point out another closed down restaurant on the other side of town to explain it away:confused:.

Actually he was responding to someone else who specifically used Apple as an example of good/better customer service (vs. Samsung).

I agree with your general point about 'two wrongs not making a right' (we all know three lefts makes a right...)

If you READ his response, it was a reply to Cuerbo's statement and was in context.

>>>WHOOOOOOSH>>>

Yeah... that was the point I was making, flying right over your head.

Interesting all the different perspectives people have. In my case, while I certainly enjoy a lot of the things other than GPS, the main reason I went with a smart phone was so I could have 1 device for phone, PDA, and GPS, instead of 3. My 3 year old Tilt has sufficed, but is an unpleasant experience now.

My understanding has always been end of September for the fix. I'm hoping that is true, but a bit skeptical. (And I'm fine if Froyo takes longer).

Due to not wanting to be stuck with the phone for 2 years with a bad GPS, I took mine back. Me and my epeen are patiently suffering with the old Tilt waiting for this to come out fixed.

And if it doesn't, I'm hoping that by the Christmas season that AT&T has something else decent to offer.

Lordy...having had this phone for 28 days, I surely hope I don't have to wait that long for something (I don't consider a switch to another carrier much of an alternative).

Look up Firmware 2.09 for Samsung Blu Ray player, a total disaster. They went months denying there were any problems with it. The same PR blunder is being done with this GPS issue. I knew about it when I got the phone and trusted it would be handled in a timely manner. Today we hear that it will be released with Froyo, if that UK info is correct. Why wasn't that announced earlier? Where's the coordination with AT&T, both of these companies should be working together to keep their customers informed. No matter which way you put it, poorly handled.

Sweet, now all we have to do is wait for AT&T to remove all the useful stuff from Froyo and replace it with AT&T apps that suck up data plan kilobytes even when they aren't doing anything. That shouldn't take too long. Maybe this time they will figure out how to remove Google Maps and ban downloading it from the app store.

Head over to Samsung's support page and look for GPS, here's the reply you'll get from them. Nowhere does it say there's a known issue and a fix is being worked on. Total BS.

You do realize Samsung uses other outlets for their up-to-the-minute news than their website, which probably requires a red-tape process of weeks to get info onto it?

From: Galaxy S support (GalaxySsupport) on Twitter

we're testing GPS update currently and fully expect for it to be available in September
Look for update to address that in Sept. Thanks for your patience!
we're testing software that optimizes GPS for US GalaxyS phones. Please expect in Sept.
The GPS update is coming sometime in Sept.
Samsung is testing software to optimize GPS on Galaxy S phones. Look for updates in Sept. Details & download instructions to follow.
Unfortunately, we do not have an exact date for the GPS update, however, it will be coming sometime in Sept.
From: Samsung Service | Facebook

I understand your concerns. We are currently testing software that optimizes the GPS feature both the Vibrant and Captivate and expect to see this available this month. I'll post here as soon as I have more information concerning the update.
I expect updates to address this for the Vibrant and Captivate to be available this month. I'll post here as soon as I have additional details.
Samsung continues to listen to customer feedback on GPS performance expectations on launched Galaxy S devices. We are currently testing software updates which will optimize GPS performance. We expect to be able to make the updates available in September and will communicate more information and download instructions in the next few weeks.
And that's just the past couple weeks.

Yeah, that Apple sure is on the ball, when it comes to addressing issues.
While I agree that Apple royally screwed up by designing the antenna on the outside, let's put their customer service in perspective.

  • Apple addressed the issue with a conference 2 weeks after the phone was released. Samsung didn't even admit to a problem for European GS users until recently. Samsung has been playing coy using words like "optimize". Samsung also told Engadget the Epic 4G was fine and one look at the Epic forum says things are not fine. Samsung also said the fix will be released "sometime in September". Personally, I bet September will come and go with no real fix considering the Fascinate, which has yet to be released, seems to have GPS issues still (see vid below).

  • Apple offered a bandaid fix (a bumper) for free.

  • If one wasn't satisfied with the bandaid fix from Apple, one could return the phone for a full refund.

Apple knew they screwed up, but at least they gave the user options including a full refund. If Samsung can't fix the GPS to 2010 smartphone standards, can we expect a full refund? Partial refund? Anything other than "better luck next time"?

Ouch. That was a devastating video. What is up with these guys? They are going to lose a golden opportunity to Moto and HTC permanently if Samsung Android becomes an oxymoron like military intelligence or plastic silverware.

I admit, the longer this update takes, the more i become convinced there is some irreversible hardware issue. I am still optimistic tho. I mean come on guys. They never said september 1st or the beginning of september. If anything wait until september is over before we start getting too impatient

apology accepted!!!

ps...just kidding..yes i see the light now re the comment you were referencing. I do still though think two wrongs not making a right are important here...hope they fix this.
