I was wondering if there is a way to swap the 4 icons that a re on the screen by the clock.

I want to remove the maps icon and replace it with the messaging icon

If you long-press on a shortcut, you can drag it around or event delete it.

And in the applications tab if you click and hold you will end up with that app shortcutted to your "home screen" which if you were unaware has a middle and left and right, each can store icons.

By my count you can store 16 per screen. (if you removed the clock and google search.) And if you grab anycut you can create a folder and store more.
