First Droid Eris update makes the slow OTA rollout starting tonight

I don't understand what about the battery there is to fix. The battery life is what it is, I get a full days use out of mine as long as I'm not using multimedia type apps nonstop.
.

Everday i turn on my phone its 100%, within 2hours sitting idle with no use it drops to 70%(drained battery 3 times, keep all the unnecessary apps off,etc....) . Thats not normal:mad::mad::mad:

I think i might take it back,i might just have a lemon, if this update doesn't improve it.I do think the battery meter is flakey.

Is it est or pst? :D

And yes I also hope they address battery life....

Don't forget this also means root and hero 2.0 Rom :p

Why does this automatically mean we will be able to root from this update? If anything I thought updates were a setback because holes that existed get patched.

Ok so this is the same issue i have yeppers im going to the store for a new one also. After reading some post im going to say i have a lemon.

Sorry I was just trying to cheer up some negativity around here. :D From what I understand is we need a file from VZW in order for root to be possible. If this only hits ota then yes we would have to wait till next big update. :)

I feel bad for people having battery problems! I use my phone a lot throughout the day and get between 16 and 18 hours, no problem. If I want more time, I turn off the "extras" like GPS and mobile network. Then I get like 2-3 days if I do that.

I'm still waiting for this update. I have a feeling that the Eris will only get better and better as time goes by!

Can people post the time that they got the update. I'm curious if this is done in batches or they slowly release it all day long?

I just turn off Network Connect when I am at home. Now it lasts 3-4 days before having to be recharged.

We've discussed this before. Enjoy your "dumb phone" with good battery life. You should not need to shut down essential features of the phone to get reasonable battery life.

I've conditioned my battery for 4 days in a row. I leave off Wifi and bluetooth, but leave GPS on. Today my up time is 6 hours so far with 1 hour of awake time and the battery is at 60%. Does this seem worse than what other people are getting with a conditioned battery? Wondering if I should take it back for another.

The fails in comparison to the original update list that was leaked soon after the 11/6 launch. Where are the Exchange updates that were proposed?

This really sucks.

Thats why some people need to sloooooow down some and understand that you cant believe every rumor you hear on the internet until it is confirmed by the actual company.

That long list of issues/fixes was NOT confirmed by Verizon. It could have been typed up by someone with too much time on their hands. Who knows.

(No offense to you, ryanc2. Im just talking....)

I do wish that I could get 2 whole days (48 hours) out of this phone with full usage. That would be great! But I'm happy knowing that if I do need extra juice, I can turn off everything and still have a functioning "dumb" phone. Sometimes I forget that this IS a phone, afterall, even though I treat it like a tiny computer/camera/GPS.

Doing the math, you're looking at 15 hours of battery life. (6 hrs divided by .4 = 15 hrs) I would say that's average? I found my battery life has been increasing the last few weeks, too. Maybe I'm just playing with it less than when it was brand new! haha.

I dont understand why people need to get 2 days out of a battery. Just remember to plug it in every night! I pull my phone off the charger when I leave for work, and put it back on when I goto bed ... hasnt died on me yet.

I don't NEED it, but longer battery life would be great for everything. I do the same thing you do...charge up my phone overnight and I'm good to go the next morning.

You know that if the phone lasted 5 days, nobody would say, "Darn, I hate how my battery lasts so long!" haha.

You'd probably hear, "I wish it lasted 10 days!"

I bet in like 2 years, we'll be looking back and saying "Remember how phone batteries used to only last 2 days? How crappy was that???"

But all that said, I'm VERY happy with my Eris. If I use it normally, I get close to 20 hrs and I'm sure I could stretch out to 24 - 30 hours if I used wifi and turned off this and that. This is my first smartphone and after many years of being envious of my friends with their BB's and iPhones, I'm thrilled that I finally have such an awesome phone.

Keep in mind, the "awake" time measures the time you're phone has been in use since startup. If you turn your phone on, then immediately go look at the awake time, of course it is going to be 100%... It hasn't slept yet ;)

But I'm not sure about your 70% thing though. If you turn it on, look, it should say 100%. Then leave it idle for 2 hours, go back and look, you should definitely be much lower (probably in the 10% range or so).

I tested mine out using Advanced Task Killer. I killed all tasks, then started excluding them one by one and checked the awake time. I would look at the awake time, note it, then put the phone to sleep (end button). Wait 10 mins or so, and check the awake time again. If the time is the same (within 30-45 secs or so), I considered the app safe to exclude. If the awake time had also increased 10 mins while sleeping, the app is considered a killer. I also did tests with sending/receiving text messages and e-mails (gmail app).

Here are my current "excluded" apps, which do not seem to affect my awake/sleep time:

- Messages (stock app)
- The Weather Channel (widget, w/ severe weather notifications)
- providers.htccdma (not sure what exactly that is, but it doesn't seem to hurt and it sounds important, haha)
- Gmail (I still get e-mail notifications instantly)
- Facebook (without widget)
- BatteryLife (with widget)

I also have the Advanced Task Killer widget set on my home screen, so with one click it kills all open apps except for the ones I listed above.

I have been getting around 15+ hours with moderate usage (instant e-mail push, some texting, some internet browsing, Market browsing, playing with a few apps every now and then, and about 45-60 mins of phone calls).

Hope this helps!

That's not awake time, that's the actual battery level.

Ah I see. In that case, I think there is something wrong with the measuring system. When I unplugged my phone this morning, I was at 100%. After 30 mins, I was down to 92%. Another hour, I was down to 80-something%. I was getting worried. But, now it's been 4 hours, and I am sitting at 79%.

So as others have suggested before, I think the first 20% of the "battery life" meter drains very quickly. Then the rest is really solid. Like I said, I get 15+ hours. Even when I get the warning that my phone has reached 15%, I can still get a good hour or so out of it. Last night, my phone stayed at 9% for such a long time, before I finally ended up plugging it in...

anyone got the update today. Woke up and message came on my screen

update:

so it updated. Why does it seem that the lock screen is unresponsive now. What they heck is it just me. I have to swipe down a couple of times for the screen to unlock.

anyone with the same problem. Do i need to recalibrate again??

I am a BB Tour user about make the switch to the Eris. This is exactly what I do every day. If I can to do this with the Eris and not have to charge during the day at work I will be extremely satisfied. The Tour dies by 8 o'clock some days. Plus from all the reading i have done on here sounds like I will enjoy the Eris way more than the BB. Maybe only missing BB Messenger?

got the over the air update this morning pacific time.

why does the lock screen seem so unresponsive.... i have to swife down a couple time for it to unlock. Did you guys notice that

Ive actually had that issue a few times and I dont have the update yet. I've experienced that on the lockscreen AND the home screen before. It eventually corrects itself but when it happens on the home screen, it takes a lot longer for it to sense my touch. Dosnt happen often...

I think something that changed is that you have to start your swipe on or below the gray bar/area instead of being able to swipe anywhere on the screen. Could that be what you're experiencing?

Goddamn people, reading this same stuff over and over is so frustrating. IF YOU TAKE A FEW PROACTIVE STEPS, YOUR BATTERY LIFE WILL BE FINE.

1) Adjust your screen brightness to 25% 2) Use wifi when available 3) Don't have GPS on constantly 4) Put it in sleep mode when not using it 5) Get Handcent or Chomp and turn off native SMS client.

This does not equal using dumbphone, it equals using a tiny bit of common sense and not expecting your Eris to be a magical device unbeholden to the laws of physics. It has a tiny battery, hence the non-brick-like design we all like so much. I guess if you expect to run every single bell and whistle constantly w/out any effort putting into power management, I can see getting frustrated with battery life, but wtf?

Also, IT HAS A L-ION BATTERY. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO CONDITION YOUR BATTERY, REPEAT, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO CONDITION YOUR BATTERY.

This is correct, Lithium-ion batteries don't have memory effect. I've seen a lot of people mentioning conditioning here and I never commented. But when I first got the phone, I read up a bit on this and it's definitely an unnecessary process for us.

Nope, that sounds good.

GPS is a killer, will be on any phone.

yes. Before the update i could start at the top and unlock. Now i have to swipe below or on the grey. Which is annoying.

why did they change it
