My experience with Juice Defender has not been great - at least not in regards to battery life. I let to do it's thing for an entire day, and I actually ended up with 5-7% LESS left on my battery than with out using it at all, though the notification bar claimed I was seeing an 84% increase in battery life. I left it in the default configuration with the 15/1 3G scheduling. I may give it another shot in the future, but I was not terribly happy with it in my experience. It may work great if you just wanted to turn off the radio to save on your data usage though.
To force the phone into EDGE mode you have to access the service menu. You can do this by opening the dialer and entering *#*#197328640#*#* then going into [1] DEBUG SCREEN > [8] PHONE CONTROL > [4] UE STATE CONTROL. Option 3 (GSM) will put the radio into 2G/EDGE mode, option 2 (WCDMA) will put it back on the 3G.
There is also an application in the marketplace called "SamServMode" that will bring up the service menu on Samsung handsets, which is mode convient then typing the access code into the dailer constantly. And no, you can't add the service mode code as a contact and use that for easy accessA widget that would do this for us would be tops.
I've had Juice Defender for about 2 weeks, but only this morning figured out how to make the 1min per 15min data save my battery usage and probably data usage as well.
When you're in JD, you need to click the APPS button so that it is lit. Once lit, there is a CONFIG APPS button you need to click. When it opens you'll see a list of all the apps on your phone. Click on the ones that you want JD to control on its 1min per 15min schedule. The green up/down arrows will light up for the ones you clicked. If you DON'T want JD to control an app DON'T click the app, leave it alone [icon is grey]. If you want an app to NEVER use data, like EVER (e.g., ATT bloatware) - double click on it and it will not allow it to use data at all [icon has X through it]. BACK OUT so that all the changes are saved. Close JD. Then open JD up again. This ensures that JD re-reads the list of apps to control. You are done.
By doing this, my Battery Life went from 1.82 to 2.22. We'll see if that is actually the case.
Also, since I added apps that that I don't use a lot onto the CONFIG APPS list, I changed the Schedule to enable data 2min every 30mins instead.
BTW, I had purchased Ultimate Juice, an add-on to JD, so it's possible that the Config Apps is only available with Ultimate Juice. I don't remember if I could get to Config Apps without UJ.
