G1 Bugs

Thank you thank you thank you- I have been having this problem alot. I've had my phone for a couple days, and it's frozen several times. It definitely seems like the phone is "overloaded". PLEASE someone weigh in on this. I hate having to take my battery out, and there should at least be a keycombo to restart the thing. It hasn't frozen since I've read about the "soft restart" (home + power for 20 secs), so I'll try that next. But I'd really like to know how to avoid crashes, because that's really bogus.

I see alot of people talking about this in my google searches on the subject. But there doesn't seem to be alot of solid answers. Someone help, please!

There is a key combo to restart, learned it today.
[Green Call Key] +
[Menu Button] +
[Hangup Key]

Press and hold all three at once.* Screen will dim and restart almost instantly. This even fixed a problem I was having with the MyFaves App force closing ( I was dumb and dumped the data on MyFaves).

So I've noticed this twice, not sure if it's a problem with android or with anycut.

On one of my screens I have about 4-5 contact links. The kind you setup by long pressing the home screen, selecting shortcut>contact and picking a person/number. I've edited them because I hate when you have a longer name for a shortcut and it says "John D..." and "Jane M..." putting those elipses in there. So i've edited them down to first names, or what have you.

Well, I don't think this is immediate but at some point the contact links shift to a different name. Usually within the same letter. For example, I tap on "Jon" on my home screen and "Jeannie" contact entry comes up. I tap on "Aaron" and "Andrew" comes up instead. I tap on "Tom" and "Tina" comes up instead. This means those shortcuts are worthless and I have to dump them all.

start adding an application to the desktop, have the application menu there ready for your little fingers to press on the app and you get an email arrive, the G1 bings bongs blips or does whatever cheery little tune it does when you get an alert and the whole desktop is frozen. You can pull down the notification bar, you can drag up the menu but can you drag the desktop about or long press on it? can you <insert profanity here>!

If you are low on memory yes it will freeze make sure to clear the cache whenever you can and power off the phone once a day will help alot and the key combo for restart is call button-menu-end call button

Also, I found that clearing my previous call logs and text messages have helped my phone run better. I don't need to restart my phone nearly as often.

Another thing regarding battery life: I had power manager installed and was only getting like 4-5 hours of battery life. After uninstalling Power Manager, my battery life increased dramatically. I think the application must not be letting the phone sleep properly or something.

Ok, I haven't heard of anyone else having this problem, but sometimes when I close my keyboard after texting or what-not, it automatically shuts off. No prompt, no noise, nothing. I don't even let it slam! Seriously annoying. I factory reset the phone and haven't had any more problems (yet...). Still, it was very annoying.

Thanks so much for the help, everyone!

Honestly I was doing some hard core Google-Fu for this and couldn't find anything.

On a side note, getting to know the quirks of the system has given me a better experience. It hasn't crashed in a long time. All in all I'm really happy with my phone.

Contacts Issue: the Contacts screen remembers any characters that were entered to perform a search even after a call is made or returning to the Home screen. Often this leads to my next search failing because I do not notice there are some characters already there from the previous search.

I have discovered a work-around and that is to hit the back button repeatedly until it removes the search characters. I may eventually train myself to exit Contacts this way instead of pressing the Home button.

make sure you dont have thousands of txt messages that bogs the phone down and so does having multiple browser pages open.... check that first and to reboot press call+menu+end

wow, my thread became a sticky! I feel kinda special :-p

I was gone for awhile, basically because i havent been having any problems! My alarm has been working swimmingly (I still have the same G1 that I pre-ordered a year ago), my myFaves has fixed itself... and the gps works great (unless i'm by my parent's place in rural Maine... understandably).

HOWEVER, I'm having a new issue with dropped calls. I've talked to other G1 owners and they don't seem to be having the same issues as I, but I thought I'd run it by you guys too. I'd say at least once or twice a week (sometimes a couple a day) my call just gets dropped... sometimes i don't even recieve a call at all... I just get a notification of a new voicemail. Sometimes it's when I'm on the road... sometimes when I've just been sitting on the couch. (the person i'm talking to assures me it's not on their end... it's even happeend when I'm talking to my mom on a land line).

I have equipment insurance, so I'm seriously considering calling them up and demanding a new phone... assuming it's just my phone and not a common problem.

Any advice?

I just got the 1.6 version of Android (donut) -- and the headset adapter for wired headsets has died again. I'm on hold with Tmobile, but I'm not at all confident that they'll even understand the problem, let alone be able to solve it.

Anybody got a solution?

I contact Tmobile and requested a fix for the broken wired headset / adapter issue. The mailed me a brand new phone with 1.5 (cupcake) on it -- so I'm back to using toggleheadset as my solution.

But, I certainly will not install the update again, if I can help it.
