Help Samsung Galaxy S - Indian thread

It might seem a bit overwhelming at first, but then u'll get used to it... :)

Yeah ...It's a huge improvement personally for me coming from a Nokia 5800XM (except for the music quality in loudspeaker. Even though you'll find tons of apps for s60v5, most of them are not of that high quality)

Hello,

Just wanted to know whether the Gtalk application works on prepaid connections.
Will i be able to chat on Gtalk with my gmail contacts with a prepaid connection or should i have a postpaid connection???

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Kumar.

Hi guys,
11th Nov. has come almost gone.
Any body got froyo update ??
Or any news on probable date for update :-)

M really sorry if i sound rude, but srs guys, grow up. Samsung's work is to provide to you a wonderful electronic device. Bcoz thats what samsung is, isn't it? Its an electronics company. And since when did an electronics company start providing quality software?

Android is about Google. Its not about Samsung. There are loaaadsss of quality developers on XDA who have designed Froyo for your wonderful handset.

Ok, look at it this way.. Samsung is trying to make their own stand in the world of mobile OSs. They're making bada. Does anyone of u follow the bada forums? They're getting updates like hell. In my opinion, they're concentrating more on bada and very less on Android.
Keeping aside all the bada Vs Android; when there are such great OS available so easily.. (my gosh these ppl on XDA are insane, they've made your work sooooo freakin easy!!) why are u waiting for samsung to release stuff officially? It really doesn't matter! M sure ppl who are waiting for samsung are some brand nerds... (srry about that)

I'm providing a few snapshots of my Froyo [ MILLION thanks to Doc & kalpik] so as to give u an insight of things going on around. I wish I could post videos on how my gallery loads and stuff.. Maybe I'll do it to promote Doc & Kalpik's ROM (simply in love with it)... Here's a preview...

Thanks.

If you need ANY assistance in installing Doc & Kalpik's OS. We're all there to support you. (btw, at XDA, you get a reply to a question you ask related to the OS in about 3 minutes anytime round the clock!)

Cheers!

Dear Parikksit,
You must understand two things~
1. Everybody may not be as tech.savvy as you appear to be (there is a fellow who does not know the difference between mini & micro usb ports ) nobody, at least not I, want(s) to risk brick a Rs 30,000+ phone; besides Samsung do have some good things in their UI-
like swype which I am using right now.
2. Smartphones are not just electronics software is at least equally important (you could easily have purchased a Bada phone-ready updates all the time :D ) So, when every body else- like HTC, are giving quick updates for their phone:)s Samsung too WILL HAVE to do the same if they wish to retain the newly acquired customers I was using a windows mobile of htc prior to this phone , and since they are not doing it fast enough hence the disappointment. One can sacrifice a bit (SAMOLED) and go back to htc, besides 2.1 is really not THAT bad !!! :)

I believe the official 2.2 froyo will still have the RFS which is the main reason why the phone lags badly.

Fixes are available in the xda forums. I use Universal lagfix advanced ext4 which is built into doc_kalpik's rom.

If flashing custom ROM is not a solution for you, I suggest using Autokiller or OCLF

:confused:To be honest, I'm not tech-savvy at all. I bought this phone about couple of months back and started entering the world of android since then. And I realised that the world that samsung is giving to us really sucks. But yes, I shouldn't deny the fact that after having all this done (flashing etc etc) I do know a lot more than people around here. But I was the same about 2 weeks back when i first flashed my ROM. :)

Coming to the bricking the phone, (something really important that needs to be discussed), as far as I have discovered, SGS is very very difficult to brick. Also, if you follow the right instructions, there is no way you may brick your phone. I think kalpik is the right person who can shed some more light on this topic. :)

Coming back to swype :p(this issue also troubled me for quite some time) ... Doc and kalpik's ROM do have swype, with loads of languages as well. And to be honest my friend, Swiftkey is a better option over swype. I'm not saying swype sucks, but swiftkey is equally good (for me, it is better than swype).:)

Another good thing about this phone.. You can get it back to EXACTLY the way you got it out of the box.. So you can claim warranty if you really have to ;)
Absolutely right.... I've done that already once... not that I wanted to claim the warranty but i installed an OS and never really liked it.

btw, the devs on XDA flash their ROMS like a dozen times a day. And they haven't yet bricked their phones. So relax...

Kalpik, please comment over phone bricking... u know it best.

thanks.

If I reach a stage where I need to claim warranty for the phone, it might not be in a state where I can flash anything else on it. Besides, my reason is that I personally dont see any lag on the phone or any other major issues on the phone. I would have never known of any lag if I hadn't read these forums.

Thanks buddies I think I will wait for a week for Samsumg Froyo and then tighten my boot laces and go for it, Kaplik may yet get my thanks :-)

It'd be really helpful if you could tell me (us), how to do that..I've seen in this thread that you had taken the backup of your friends' firmware..But,If I remember correctly, mamababu2007 rooted his phone , and found that the baseband version was changed, and there was no way for him to get it back.

I've currently rooted my device and run ryanza's OCLF. (I believe it provides the option to unroot it, so that everything is back to normal, in case I need to visit the samsung store?)...

But, am very hesitant to try out ROM's for now.. Any help would be appreciated .. :)

Also, I would really love to know whether there is an option to change the language in the text-to-speech engine to English(India) (Google Maps in S60v5 with English(India) provided v.accurate results while using voice search. Currently, I have downloaded the now-defunct voice search for 2.1, but the only English available is English-UK and English-US)..

Any ideas? Anyone?

There was a fellow, in one of the threads on android forums itself who managed to brick his SGS :) & f:Dor all I know he may be better than me (tech savvy I mean:D , not at bricking the phone:) )
Lots of thanks any way. I may yet gather enough courage to do it, the Froyo update or Bricking which ever comes first :D.

Hi Kalpik after hearing your comments and knowing that Froyo update have been further delayed, i have got some courage and would like to try and update Froyo myself.
I'm on stock DDJG4 at the moment and would kindly request you for some links and help for updating to Froyo and if possible please provide a step by step guide to update to Froyo.
Thanks Kalpik, awaiting your reply (Please bear in mind that i'm a novice at all this.)

Many people (including me) who flash ROMs incorrectly and get booting troubles think that they have successfully :P bricked their phones. Perhaps that could be a case.

Doc's thread has got more than 6500 posts now, not one report of bricking the phone.

Woaw, I was really overwhelmed by this message. Its funny how when lesser mortals such as us discuss about something, you decide to message us... haha truly awesome.. I am still new to the whole android world... what do you mean by virtually unbrickable?

It means that in the hundreds of flashes I've done so far, I have never found a way to brick this phone! (Yes, I've even pulled the cable between a flash ;))
