Canada - Android 2.2 Released! Details inside.

Dayno

Samsung has released Froyo 2.2 to it's users for the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant.

Sorry...

If you are an owner of a Samsung GalaxyS Captivate (SGH-i896) or Samsung GalaxyS Fascinate 3G+ (SGH-T959), the upgrade software for these phones is currently being tested and we are working on a release for later in December 2010.

I don't know where you are updating from but I live in Saskatoon and I have been using KIES for about two months now and when I open Kies and hit the update Icon I go through the whole backup routine and then it tells me my GT-19000M cannot be updated. I am with SaskTel. What is the scoop here. What carrier are you on in Saskatchewan? Unless there is something wrong my phone which I doubt, it would seem that most of us in Saskatchewan cannot update to 2.2 at this time. Where did you get your info?

I am using Sasktel.

The update went through easily.

Try Kies again. If you're still not getting it, let me know.

..and what to do for mac users (no Kies on apple)? Will there be an OTA upgrade via Bell (I'm in NS)
(I could use a Win machine at work perhaps, though they don't appreciate 'other' software being loaded to their machines)

You could use a computer at work, a friends, or download a virtual machine and run an instance of windows on your mac...

I havn't researched mac compatibility anywhere yet. They don't mention anything about mac users in the download instructions?

Hey, I have my SGS through Sasktel as well. I've been waiting for the update and finally see that I can get it! I was just wondering if you have to do anything specific before upgrading...I see they ask you to back up your contacts right away. But what about apps/photos/vids and things like that, or does it all transfer over with the upgrade? Also I've seen people on here say that they had to do a factory reset after downloading, did you have to do that?

I'm luckily one of the few people that haven't had lag/wifi problems etc with 2.1... has the phone worked well since the update to 2.2, no problems to report??

I havn't had a single problem during/since the upgrade. All your apps move over to 2.2 and some new ones come with 2.2 that will probably leave you wanting to delete your old apps (like Skyfire to play some flash sites on 2.1, the stock browser comes with flash in 2.2!!).

Follow the instructions as they appear on the screen and you shouldn't have a problem. It takes about 5-20mins to update it completely. This is including the wait time(your phone will sit at the Galaxy S Symbol for a during the upgrade).

Thanks dayno--that's what I thought. Maybe Bell will do OTA someday...
In the meantime, have you seen this thread regarding bricked Vibrants with Froyo install?! Gives one pause...is this upgrade worthwhile yet?

As for that problem I'm sure if you follow the steps it will not happen. I also can not see Samsung or your carrier leave you high and dry with a phone that no longer works because you were updating the firmware with a supported method. If you rooted your phone, yes... then perhaps. lol.

Wanna bet?

My 1-month old Bell SGS, totally stock, went through a very straightforward and (I thought) painless upgrade to Android 2.2. Little did I know the corrupt Bell code was insideiously lurking, only to reveal its nefarious nature five days after the upgrade.

I just updated to 2.2 on a Vibrant with Sasktel. It broke the phone. Samsung said it must be sent back for repair. I spoke with a tech this afternoon at Samsung Canada who said it is a known problem with the update! Remarkable.... they've been testing this all year, from what I've read.

It's working for some in Canada and others not. Watch out!

I am with SaskTel and I updated my vibrant last night off of Kies. Went awesome. Took all of 15 minutes. No fuss no muss. Everything is running great so far. I am not a techi and my phone is stock so maybe I am going to be one of the lucky ones. Will keep you updated. From what I see so far I like what I see.

Hearing that makes me question whether or not I should update...My phone has worked perfect ever since I got it...your first person Ive read about with issues with the sasktel update, most people here have reported success with it through Sasktel already I donno what to do lol!!

Have any of you guys who updated to 2.2 found better battery life for your phone? On 2.1 I have to charge mine basically every night, and sometime I hardly use it....

Even though my phone was taken out, I wouldn't hesitate (given that others are successful). I think there are some good improvements to the software that improve the basic use of the phone. I would think you would want to do this while you're still under warranty. :-)

Ya thats what I have been thinking, given I do have warranty...Ill probably give it a whirl tonight (fingers crossed!).

Is it possible Sasktel pulled the update... I just went on Kies to upgrade the firmware and it says no update is available for me when on Tuesday it said it was. WTF is going on!!!?

Some people need to be saved from themselves. Why would you be so hell-bent on upgrading, knowing what's going on with even stock phones being destroyed by the "upgrade?"

Because most people I've talked to and read online that have upgraded through Sasktel have not had problems (obviously that doesn't mean it cant happen to me). Most people on Bell have had the problems and their update was released separate from Sasktel. And I'm not "hell-bent" to upgrade, if I was I would of done it immediately on Tuesday when it was available to me on kies. Instead I was waiting to see what the response was from others with carrier service through Sasktel in hopes of potentially saving myself from unnecessary problems.

Sasktel phones and the OS are virtually identical to Bell (might even have the same model number). The most reasonable answer is the population difference. There are many times more SGS owners in the Bell coverage area, and so the majority of problems are reported there.

There are a few reports from Australia of bricked SGS phones with 2.2. Somebody around here posted a link, forget who.

To be honest, it seems my phone's battery life is a BIT better. I think it may have to do with the fact you can easily turn on/off services now and the task killer is much better. There is also a way to get rid of things running in the backround now, like ebay. haha.

Also still no reported problems.

My theory is that my phone was bought recently. It could have to do with the manufacturing date on the phone. They probably changed some small things from when the phone model was released to now, which may have been the deciding factor in 'bricked' phones. It also may be the fact some people have open applications and other things running when it says "Shut down all open applications before upgrading" and you get a slight memory overload and it corrupts the update.
