Do you use chomp or handcent?

I was looking at the searches for chomps vs handcent, but didn't see anything for the sprint version of this.

I am going to get a Hero very soon (switching from a Palm Pre) and so was just wondering what you use?

Are there any pro's or con's to using Handcent or Chomp? (battery life, speed, crashes, quick replying, etc)

I just dled handcent last night and haven't used it much. It almost has too many different settings it takes like 10 min to go through them all. The one problem I'm having is I now get 2 notifications, one from handcent and one from the stock app. I read somewhere that chomp doesn't support mms.

Handcent!!! I have tried both and handcent is just way more customizable and that is what I am looking for in any app I install.

I'm SO new...just wondering what handcent does. I don't even have my phone yet but I've seen people talking about it but still don't really know what it is.

I have used both and the features are pretty much the exact same now that Chomp can do MMS. Handcent does seems to make my phone a tad slower though. I am currently using Chomp and am very happy with it.

I got my Hero Thursday coming from a Pre and got Handcent immediately. It's awesome and so worth getting. I haven't checked out Chomp, though, but I might have to if Handcent slows down the phone...Dhowell, can you elaborate a bit on that?

Go into the messages app and hit menu>Settings tap notifications and that will turn off your dual alerts.

the reason people go with either one is that the stock message app doesn't let the phone go into sleep mode which will drain your battery. i used handcent and have no problems with it at all.

wasn't this fixed with the recent maintenance fix?

I'm thinking of heading back to the stock app, since Handcent seems to have an issue with MMS for me right now, but it might be an issue with my phone. I'm about to do a hard reset to check things out.

Yes this issue has been resolved. No more battery issue from the stock SMS.

I used Handcent before the OTA update and then switched back to the stock after the fix just to see if I liked it. But now I miss handcent! The stock app is good, but not nearly customizable as Handcent. Plus I really like the quick reply feature.

I think Handcent is well worth checking out.

I've had problems with handcent loading slowly. It seems to take quite a while to start. Anyone else have that problem? That is the only problem I have with it.

My friend turned me on to handcent, I like the voice text feature. It just took some tweaking to get rid of the extra alerts and such.

I have been using ChompSMS and I have had no problems with it. It customizes about the same as handcent. The way to decide is to just install both and use each for a bit and see which you prefer.

Had been using Handcent, d'loaded Chomp yesterday. Just about the same, however, I can customize Chomp just a little more. I also like how Chomp handles the reply of messages by placing the keyboard UNDER the message so that you can see what you are typing in both the regular reply as well as the quick reply. The quick reply on Handcent was driving me nuts because the keyboard would cover the text box after you type the first line.

To answer the question....CHOMP for me!

They are very similar to each other. I wish the stock ap was more customizable and had similar functionality to chomp and handcent... I hate having aps to do what the phone has built in.

I've had serious problems with handcent both times i've tried to use it. It simply would not retrieve my messages, even if the stock app was still configured to give notifications of incoming messages. They just disappeared into the ether. It's all chomp for me, fast, easy, and as customizable as I need.

I like handcent because it allows you to reply to a text without having to unlock the phone.

When a text comes in a pop up allows you to reply or cancel. Either way, it's a feature I don't think Chomp has. For some reason, with the recent update to the Chomp app it now force closes on me when I tried to send a message.

I like Handcent more. Chomp is not compatible with using MMS which is a deal breaker for me! However, still considering going back to the stock Messenger just to see how much faster it is than Handcent.

I had both Chomp and Handcent on my Hero. They are both similar, except the Handcent easily works with MMS.
