Viper SmartStart: Worth Buying? Which One?

Viper SmartStart products, where you can remotely start your vehicle, would be the PERFECT XMAS gift for someone I know. That being said, I've read a couple poor reviews online that it only *works* a portion of the time. What's your experience?

If it's recommended by folks here - even if only the FOB - I'll get it. If the Android App works great along with it- I'll be inclined to get more than one. But I don't want to buy a gift that ends up being a huge bummer.

Also: there are a billion models- which do you recommend?

The smartstart server was down all last night into mid-day today. Couldn't use it on my phone or ipad. the SW developers basically suck compared to the competition.

I think this is an intriguing market, I hope it'll be developed far enough in the near future to hopefully work out those bugs, and add a competition so that it'll drive prices down

I've jumped from the 791xv or whatever to a 9000 something series. The ones with the 2way remotes and 1-2 miles ranges. Worth it... To be able to have it on your phone is just a neat factor.
