Help Is it safe to upgrade the android version of samsung galaxy s i9000?

Hi all
I'm using samsung galaxy si9000
I want to know whether updating my android version from 2.1 to 2.3 directly is safe or not? If anyone has already updated their version and is facing problems please let me know

Sent from my GT-I9000 using phandroid app

I don't think 2.3 is officially available for the Galaxy S yet, only 2.2.
You can flash it yourself using Odin but do so at your own risk.

Dont do it unless you dont want wifi, want your phone to run 3x slower and dont actually want to use it for more than 10 minutes before it dies or runs out of charge

I cant see gingerbread being officially available for some time yet seeing as how long 2.2 was out before it got officially rolled out. No matter what Samsung tell you add about 3-4 months to that date. farflungfish probably means it is still in early stages yet and if you decide to flash your phone and install 2.3 it will be extremely buggyhttp://androidforums.com/members/vrindamishra.html

thanks for your reply but
Whats odin?

Odin is like kies, but not devloped by Samsung and not easy to use unless you know what you are doing. It's used for flashing un official roms to your phone, like the gingerbread one that's floating about.
The Gingerbread rom has been ported over from the Nexus S, which basically means it's a hacked version and not actually made for the Galaxy S. Although this version does work it's not 100% and not official from Samsung.

Could you explain in detail please

Farflungfish is refering to the fact that the Gingerbread port is an unofficial one, and as such is not fully working yet.
For now my advice would be stick with 2.2 Froyo as this is the official fully functional release.

If you're asking what odin is then I would suggest doing a lot more reading before attemping to flash your phone. Read as much as you can, take your time and follow the directions properly and it seems pretty safe. There are some nice stable and fast versions of 2.2.1 out there.
